Chapter 16
Reina could have never imagined the results of the infertility specialist’s report. Her fallopian tubes had been completely blocked three years ago, and she was infertile.
Meanwhile, the report showed that Xavier’s condition was perfectly fine.
She went for another checkup herself, and the results confirmed the worst.
Reina felt a sharp pang of pain. That fool had chosen to bear undeserved blame for years just to protect her reputation. And how had she repaid him?
She had known Xavier’s greatest wish was to marry her, yet she had cruelly tricked him with a fake marriage certificate. She had known that he loved Suit No. 9, yet she had secretly given it to Hugo.
She had thought Xavier wouldn’t notice, so she had recklessly squandered his love and hurt him in every possible way. She always believed he would
never leave.
But Xavier was human too. He could feel pain and disappointment.
It was her fault. She had lost the person who loved her most.
Lost in her thoughts, Reina stumbled out of the ward, only to hear strange noises coming from the ward across the hall.
As she pushed the door open, she saw a woman kneeling on the floor, and Hugo was…
Reina’s fury exploded. She slapped Hugo across the face and said through gritted teeth, “You scumbag. You’re cheating on me?”
Clutching his cheek, Hugo tried to defend himself. “Reina, I–I’m drunk, took her for you.”
Reina sneered. “I’ll make sure you pay the price for betraying me!” Her voice was a low growl as she ordered her bodyguards, “Break his legs!”
Just then, Leon walked in and whispered something in her ear.
Her eyes widened, and she shouted angrily, “Hugo, my men just found out that you saw Xavier the day he went missing. Where did you hide him? Tell me now!”
“He was taken by a group of men in black!” Hugo screamed in pain as the bodyguards pummeled him. “I don’t know where he is!”
“Ms. Yarrow, Hugo sent several provocative videos to Mr. Caldwell,” Leon added, handing her a phone.
Reina grabbed it and scrolled through the messages. Her hands began to tremble in fury.
Hugo had not only sent Xavier the live stream link for their marriage registration but also photos of them shopping at a maternity store.
The chat log felt like thousands of needles piercing Reina’s eyes, causing her tears to blur her vision.
All along, Xavier had known every lie she had tried to hide from him.
He had borne the pain alone. And to make things worse, she had forced him to peel so many oranges for Hugo.
She could only imagine how much he must have hated her when he collapsed from the allergic reaction. He must have despised her so deeply that he had chosen to disappear from her life entirely.
And Hugo was the one who had caused this!
Reina ground her teeth. Her voice shook with rage as she said, “I told you to keep our marriage secret. How dare you provoke him behind my back?” Before Hugo could defend himself, she slapped him. “You drove Xavier away and made him completely lose faith in me! Today, you will learn what it feels like to suffer! Bring me ten dogs!”
“Please, no!” Hugo’s face went pale, and he clung to her legs. “I’m sorry! Get those dogs away! I was bitten by dogs when I was a kid. I’m scared-” Reina kicked him away, disgusted, and stormed out. “Send my husband’s missing person notice to every major media outlet worldwide. Offer a one- million–dollar reward for any leads!”
She was determined to find Xavier and love him the way he deserved. She would make up for everything. She would spend her life atoning for the pain she caused him.
News of Reina’s search for Xavier reached Erelith. However, Xavier was focused on posting his architectural design lessons online. He didn’t bother checking the trending news.
His classes were a hit, attracting many students, including Reina’s mother, Sarah. She came to his villa every day and even confessed her feelings to him on Christmas,
In reality, Sarah was the same age as Xavier. Reina was the only daughter of Sarah’s longtime friend, who had entrusted her with Reina’s care. Reina had always seen Sarah as a godmother.
Xavier had turned down her advances, but Sarah had persisted. Four years had passed, but she still hadn’t given up. Eventually, Xavier began to be moved by her devotion and decided to try dating her.
On the anniversary of Derick’s death, Xavier returned to Valdoria to visit his grave at the cemetery, However, he unexpectedly ran into Reina, who was walking away with a sorrowful expression.
