Chapter 19
“Xavier, you’re just saying all these things to hurt me. I don’t believe a word of it!” Reina continued firmly, “You’ve loved me for so many years. You can’t just give up on me so easily. One day, I’ll make it right and bring you back home.”
After saying that, she turned to leave.
Ignoring her, Xavier helped Sarah sit on the couch and tended to her wound. He said seriously, “The bruise on your waist is quite severe. I’ll help you take a bath for the next few days.”
“I won’t let you help her!” Reina’s angry voice came from outside. “Xavier, I’m warning you! Don’t test my limits, or I won’t spare you!”
“Reina, do you still not understand what’s happening?” Sarah leaned possessively against Xavier’s shoulder as she looked at Reina through the window. “He doesn’t even care about your injury. He’s only worried about me. You know exactly what that means. Stop trying to salvage something that’s already over. Face the reality.”
Reina’s heart wrenched as she saw the happiness and contentment on Xavier’s face.
Trying to hold back her anger and sorrow, she said in a strained voice, “You’re nothing more than a tool he’s using to get back at me. Don’t be so smug. I’m the only one he loves!”
Sarah smiled faintly. “Xavier, would you sing me a lullaby tonight to help me sleep?”
“Of course.”
“Xavier, you’re not allowed to sing her a lullaby!” Reina’s voice broke as tears streamed down her face.
“That lullaby was my 18th birthday gift from you. It’s mine, only mine! Please don’t sing it for her. Please! I can’t take it! I’ll buy you the best oceanfront villa. I’ll support your dreams. I’ll do anything for you. Please, don’t sing for her!”
But no matter how much she pleaded, she couldn’t stop the soft sound of Xavier’s voice singing. His gentle tone was like a blade slicing through Reina’s heart. She collapsed to the ground, clutching her chest in pain.
The image of her lying on a hospital bed in the mental hospital flashed before her eyes. Xavier had been sitting by her side.
He had gently stroked her hair with his long, warm fingers while softly humming a sweet melody. “Go to sleep, Reina. I’ll always be by your side.” “Always?”
“Yes.”
“You’ll only sing to me?” Reina had asked.
“Yep.”
“You’ll never leave me?”
“Never,” he had said firmly. “Even if death takes me from you one day, I’ll come back as a spirit to be with
you
forever.”
Now, the familiar lullaby echoed, but he was singing for another woman.
Consumed by regret, Reina covered her face and cried in agony. She wished she could kili her past self.
She shouldn’t have rekindled things with Hugo for the sake of her pride. She shouldn’t have used a fake marriage certificate to deceive Xavier and break
his neart.
Did she still have a shot at winning him back? Would he ever sing that lullaby for her again?
Suddenly, her eyes were filled with madness. “Xavier is soft–hearted. As long as I try hard enough, he will surely forgive me!”
