After losing the baby, Reina fell into depression for weeks. But before long, she picked herself back up and started trying to win Xavier back all over again. This time, though, she tried a different approach. She no longer tried to force Xavier to do anything.
Instead, she quietly showed up wherever he went and gave him expensive gifts and high–end supplements. Even though Xavier turned them down every time, she still kept sending them.
One day, while Xavier was out shopping, he unexpectedly spotted Hugo running a coffee stand right outside the entrance.
After four years apart, Hugo looked worn and haggard, like he had aged a decade. A four–inch scar stretched from his cheek to the corner of his mouth, giving him a haunting appearance.
The moment he spotted Xavier, his eyes were filled with hatred. He grabbed a cup of steaming coffee and hurled it in Xavier’s direction. “You’re the reason I lost my dignity as a man! I can’t have kids anymore, and it’s all your fault! Go to hell!!”
Xavier raised his arms to block the scalding liquid. But before it could touch him, a slender figure stepped in front of him, shielding him from the splash.
Reina ordered her bodyguards to beat Hugo mercilessly, then said coldly, “Looks like I didn’t teach you a good enough lesson last time. You’ve still got the nerve to hurt him? Leon, get me ten dogs!”
Within minutes, Leon arrived with ten wolfhounds that circled around Hugo. The latter went pale and fell to his knees, begging desperately for his life. Reina ignored his pleas. She turned to Xavier, and her expression turned gentle. “Xavier, I’ll make him feel your pain a hundred times over. Leon, let the dogs loose!”
“Xavier, I’m sorry! Please tell her to stop!” Hugo shrieked as the dogs closed in. He rolled on the ground, covering his face. “My face is the most precious thing I have. If it’s ruined, I won’t be able to live!”
“Why should I help you?” Xavier asked coldly.
Hugo had no answer. He broke into bitter sobs and screamed at Reina, “Fine, I lost! But do you think you’ve won? You were married to him for years and never realized how much he meant to you. Now, you’ve lost him forever! Ha! Serves you right!”
“Shut up!” Reina snapped. “If you hadn’t tricked me by pretending to be injured, I would never have been fooled!”
Xavier was done listening to them argue. He turned and walked away.
Reina caught up and spoke softly as if afraid to provoke him, “Don’t worry. Xavier. I’ll make sure Hugo never comes near you again.”
“I don’t care,” Xavier replied coolly. “You and Hugo are the same to me now. You’re just strangers.”
“Xavier, you’re truly heartless. I’ve done so much for you, and yet you still hate me?” Reina forced a bitter smile and lowered her head in sorrow.
“Even criminals have a chance for a reduced sentence if they show good behavior. Why can’t you give me just a little bit of hope? Even if you just smile at me, I’d be happy for days.”
Xavier suddenly had an ideal “If you can do one thing, I’ll give you that.”
“Anything!” she said at once. Her eyes lit up with hope. “I’ll do anything for you, even if it costs me my life!”
“Reina Yarrow, I want you to disappear from my life forever.”
After saying that, he gave her a faint smile. “There. I’ve kept my word. I hope you can keep yours.”
The smile on Reina’s face froze. She stumbled after his car as he got in and pounded on the window while shouting, “Xavier! I’ll wait for you until the day I die! I swear!”
Exhausted, Xavier closed his eyes and said nothing.
When Reina threw herself into loving someone, her devotion could melt even the hardest ice in the world. Yet, his heart was the exception.
As time passed, the love he had longed for became a heavy burden. It actually felt suffocating.
It seemed he would need to find a way to make her give up once and for all.
