Chapter 141
As I agreed to dinner with Marcus, I felt a shiver run down my spine. I knew I was playing with fire, but I couldn’t resist the allure of Marcus’s charm. His eyes gleamed with triumph, and I sensed a hidden excitement beneath his polished exterior.
The evening arrived, and I found myself standing outside Marcus’s luxurious Lamborghini, my heart racing with anticipation. The door swung open, revealing Marcus in a sleek black suit, his eyes fixed on me with an unnerving intensity.
“Rosaline, you look stunning,” he said, his voice low and husky, as he offered his arm.
I took it, feeling a jolt of electricity as our skin touched. He gently opened the door for me and we sat in his car. The car stopped at the luxurious hotel. The dining area was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of fine wine and cuisine. Marcus led

me to the dining area, where a beautifully set table awaited us.
As we sat, Marcus poured me a glass of wine, his fingers brushing against mine. I felt a spark of attraction, but pushed it aside, reminding myself of our professional relationship.
The dinner conversation flowed
effortlessly, our banter and laughter filling: the room. But beneath the surface, I sensed a growing tension, a mutual attraction that neither of us dared acknowledge.
As the night wore on, Marcus’s gaze grew more intense, his eyes locking onto mine. with an unnerving passion. I felt myself getting lost in their depths, my resolve weakening.
Suddenly, Marcus reached across the table, his hand covering mine. “Rosaline, I think it’s time I tell you the truth,” he whispered, his breath sending shivers down my spine.
I froze, my heart racing. What was I getting

myself into? But as I looked into Marcus’s eyes, I knew I was already trapped in their depths.
“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Marcus’s smile was wicked, “I haven’t
invited you for dinner, but for the climax of the story.”
The room fell silent, the only sound the beating of my heart. I was only staring into his eyes, not knowing the meaning behind his words. Before I could ask anything, a cold husky voice sounded from behind,
“So, that’s why you ran here, leaving me so suddenly?”
I turned back to meet David’s cold gaze. To add fuel to the fire, Cynthia was also standing beside him. She walked ahead. and said in a pretentious voice, “If you were having an affair with Marcus Smith, why didn’t you break up with David by telling the truth? Why did you run away by putting allegations on my relationship with

David?”
Her words passed chills down my spine. I clunched my fists as I said in a cold voice,
““Allegations? I think you two know it very clearly whether it was just an allegation or the truth. As for my relationship with Marcus, it’s only professional.”
“Professional?” David chuckled, “Which man calls a woman on candle light dinner over a professional matter?”
“You tell me first which man stays the whole night with his female secretary in the same room?” I retorted. He chuckled, but then he stared deeply into my eyes, asking, “So, you are agreeing that you have the kind of relationship with Marcus Smith that I had with Cynthia before?”
I bit my lips angrily, and then turned to Marcus, hoping he would clear the misunderstanding or explain something to them. But, he sat leisurely on his chair, sipping his wine. I chuckled seeing his posture. Realizing that he was not going to

intervene, I turned to David again and said in a stern voice, “What if I say ‘Yes‘? Marcus Smith is as important to me as Cynthia is to you.”
David went silent for a long while, not knowing what to say.
After a long while, he finally spoke, “He was the person behind your kidnappers. How can you forgive him, Rosaline?”
“Cynthia was behind your company’s destruction, David. How can you forgive her? If you can forgive her, so can I.” I replied flatly.
“Rosaline,” He called me in a hoarse voice, “I’ll leave Cynthia and I’ll never see her again. Can you leave Marcus and come back to me?”
Cynthia’s face instantly turned pale. She tried to hold David’s hands to stop him from saying anything but he brushed her
hands off so harsh that she fell on the floor.
I smirked at the scene and turned to David

before saying, “You said the same thing last time we met, David. But, here she is standing beside you.”
He chuckled and walked up closer to me, saying desperately, “I took her only to make you jealous, Rosaline. I have nothing to do with her. If you want I can even have her arrested for selling my company’s secrets.”
“Then, do it,” I said, “I want to see her in the cell.”

David’s eyes widened in shock, and he took a step closer to Cynthia. Cynthia scrambled to her feet, her face twisted in a snarl.
“You’ll regret this, Rosaline,” she spat, before turning to David. “You’re just using me, aren’t you? You never had any intention of keeping me.”
David’s expression turned cold, and he nodded before saying in a cold voice, “You were just a pawn, Cynthia. A means to an
end.”
Cynthia’s eyes blazed with anger, and she stormed out of the room, leaving David and me alone. David then turned to me, saying,
“I have no feelings for her, Rosaline. Sooner or later, she will be behind the cell. I’ll keep my word. But, you can’t have anything to do with this man. Come with me, Rosaline. Our home is waiting for us.”
“Wait,” I chuckled, “I didn’t say I’m

coming with you, did I?”
David was stunned while I added,
“Neither am I cutting ties with Marcus, who is my good business partner.”
“It was just a part of your redemption that you should have done way earlier. But, even if you cut your ties with Cynthia and have her arrested, it will not change
anything between us. As I told you, I don’t love you anymore and I don’t want to be in a forced relationship.” I replied.
“Rosaline,” he called my name in a hoarse voice, “Is there really no chance between us? Can you really not forgive me and come back?”
I saw his eyes filled with tears, probably the first time. For a moment, I felt pity on him. But, then I remembered the day I was almost kidnapped while he was attending the concert with his beloved and the receipts of the hotel room he stayed with her. My eyes turned dark and I replied in a stern voice, “No chance!”

Just then, David fell on his knees. He covered his face with his hands and began sobbing. His cries drove the attention of all the people who were around us, and he cried really loud.
Marcus, finally sipped the last drop of his wine and stood up. He leisurely walked up to David and said, “As a man I understand. that you need clarity from Rosaline. That’s why I invited her over here so that you two can talk properly. I guess you would have understood her quite well by now. She doesn’t want you. So, don’t disturb her from now on or try to win her with dirty tricks. Because, as her business partner, I’ll not let her entertain a bad deal.”
David stopped crying. He stood up to meet my gaze. While wiping the corner of his eyes, he said, “He is right. I have
understood everything now. I… I have lost you forever, Rosaline,”
He choked on his words while saying,
“I’ll not disturb you anymore. I wish you

a happy life.”
After that day, David never crossed my path. I busied myself in expanding our family business overseas in partnership with Marcus. Sometimes, we bumped into David while attracting the same client. But, we acted quite professionally.
My life was running smoothly and peacefully. One year passed in a moment. In this time, the time I spent the most with was Marcus Smith. Though people feared him, I found him a reliable person. There was a spark between us which people misinterpreted with romance. I was often called his girlfriend in the newspaper. There were many gossips in the business circle about us. I never took them seriously. But, Luke would read them loud in front of me, trying to get my confession over it. But what would I confess? It’s not like I hadn’t felt the spark and attraction between us. But, I dare not take that step from my side as I did with David. I hadn’t recovered from the failure of my eight year relationship.

However, on New Year’s Eve, I received a call from Marcus. His voice sounded hoarse and husky. I assumed he was drunk as he said, “Marcus Smith spotted at the airport with her new business partner. He couldn’t move his eyes off her.”
“Marcus Smith is seen carrying his partner’s hand bag, a gesture he never offers to anyone.”
“Marcus Smith carried his partner in his arms after she twisted her ankle. They look so cute together. Have they fallen in love already?”
“Marcus Smith is seen buying a diamond. ring. Is he going to propose to Rosaline Cooper as she is the only woman around him?”
“Marcus,” I interrupted him, “What’s wrong?”
“Rosaline,” he called out my name, “I wonder if you ever read these articles

“Are these articles affecting you?” I asked
in a low voice.
“Yes. They are affecting me because everyone can see through me but you, Rosaline.” He replied in a deep hoarse voice, leaving me stunned.
“Marcus…” I whispered his name. It was the moment I realized how much he meant
to me. There was a long pause between us, not knowing what to say. The silence was then broken by Marcus as he asked, “Can I ask you to dinner again?”
Before I could say anything, he added,
“This time as my date?”
A smile automatically appeared on my lips. as I replied, “I want that diamond ring on my fingers then,‘
“I promise…” he replied.
