Chapter 5%
It wasn’t easy for me to move on after everything that happened so I asked for two week’s leave from work. I isolated myself from the outside world and spent my time reflecting on the bad decisions I made in life.
Good thing I bought a two–bedroom apartment for my mother using my savings before I started living with Samuel in his penthouse.
“I miss you, Dad and Mom,” I whispered while hugging my pillow in the bed.
My father left us first, leaving Mom and I to fend for ourselves. But then I pursued Samuel and made my mom live in the apartment alone. I wished I stayed with her more often when she was alive.
I spent most of my time eating and sleeping in the apartment. It was a simple and boring routine for others but it made me feel better than chasing after Samuel like I used to do in the past.
Samuel called me many times for whatever reason, but I didn’t dare to answer. I rather not have any communication with him anymore.”
James, his assistant, also came to me to relay Samuel’s message. He said that Samuel found the best cemetery in the city and would like to ask me to move my mother’s grave there.§
“Please consider, Ms. Brown. Mr. Wilson wanted to make it up with you,” James persisted.
Of course, I refused. He didn’t even care about my mother when she was alive, why would he bother with those things now that she was gone and never coming back?
My mom’s resting place was the best I could offer for her, and she’d choose it over whatever Samuel would like to give us. So, why would I disturb her just because he wanted to move the grave?}
Yes, Samuel didn’t give up.
I started to receive packages from him. I didn’t mean to check them at all but my curiosity got the best of me. I found out that he sent me a wedding dress and a pair of wedding shoes to match.
A handwritten letter was also included. I didn’t read the letter and just sent it back to him.”
Samuel must have been trying to show his kindness when he sent these things and suggested moving Mom’s grave, but as I’ve already told him, it was too late. He shouldn’t have bothered.}
Days passed just like that, and my break was over. I had to return to work to earn a living
My colleagues and superiors expressed their concern, making me realize that I was not alone. I was busy with my work when I received a call from an unfamiliar number. I had a hunch it could be Samuel so I didn’t answer at first. But the call continued until I picked it up.
“Juliet?”
I bit my lower lip when I recognized the voice. I remained quiet and waited for him to continue.
Samuel took a deep breath and spoke, “Juliet. I know you’re listening.” He took another deep breath when I said nothing in response.” “You can be angry with me all you want. I know it’s my fault and I want to apologize. I’m sorry for what happened to your mother,” Samuel continued. “Also, the Wilson Group will hold a banquet tomorrow. I’ll send someone to pick you up so make sure to get ready and dress pretty. I will announce to everyone at the banquet that you’re going to be my future wife, and that we’ll have the grandest wedding this year.”
I kept listening without saying a word. Samuel seemed to have more to say so I let him.
“I’m sorry for wronging you before, Juliet. From now on, I promise that I will take good care of you,” Samuel added, lacing every word with sincerity.
If he told me all this in the past, or at least a month ago, I would have been the happiest woman on earth. But listening to everything he said now just made me laugh.
How funny. Why would he cherish me now after pushing me to hell? Did he realize my love for him was real so he wanted to be nice to me after I left him??
He was so cheap.
“Samuel, I’m not going to the banquet,” I informed him.
“No, Juliet. You have to be there. I’ll be waiting for you,” he insisted. “Whether you attend the banquet or not, it won’t stop me from announcing to the world that you are my woman!”
Your woman, my ass!
I couldn’t take it anymore so I hung up and put my phone on silent mode. However, the next day, I found myself going to the banquet.
