Chapter 28 No Shame
Seeing that live was avoiding him, Trevor looked furious.
The anger he had worked so hard to suppress came surging backup, provoked once again by her. His voice suddenly turned cold and biting. “Are you avoiding me?”
olive didn’t respond. Instead, she took a moment to steady herself. After a long pause, she looked up at him and smiled sweetly.
“How would I dare avoid you, Mr. Horton? Aren’t you worried it’ll ruin your reputation to touch a lowly lounge singer like me?”
With that, she stood up. All the fear and nervousness from moments ago had vanished, replaced by a chilling emptiness.
“Please, Mr. Horton, let’s go. Didn’t you want me to help you pull in business? Once that’s done, I hope you’ll keep your word and give me back my daughter.”
She turned and walked out of the room before slamming the door belund her.
As the city lights flickered on, the banquet officially begin.
Outside, the entrance was packed with reporters. The moment Trevor appeared, a sea of camera flashes lit up. But what caught everyone’s attention was the woman standing beside him.
It wasn’t his fiancée, Galina.
It was Olive, the eldest daughter of the Swanson family, who had gone to prison for murder five years ago
She wore a simple white cocktail dress. Her jet–black hair brushed just past her ears, her features elegant and composed. Others could hardly tell that she’d ever been behind bars by just loolding at her.
But those who knew her well could tell there was something fundamentally different about her now, even though she still looked the same.
She smiled faintly. She knew how to handle these situations, as this wasn’t her first time navigating a high–society battlefield.
All she had to do was get through tonight. Then, she could take Solans and leave. If she couldn’t go back to Stratusville, she’d go somewhere else, as long as it was far away from Trevor,
Soon, people started coming up to greet Trevor, sneaking glances at her as they did.
In the crowd, he stood out like a beacon. His tall, lean frame and sharp features made him the center of attention, especially among the wealthy young women at the party
She quietly stepped to the side, only to hear a group of women nearby whispering with amusement and scom.
“Mr. Horton is so kind–hearted. Imagine taking in a woman is vicious as live!”
Their taunting voices rang loud and clear through the ballroom. The socialites looked at her with undisguised contempt as she sat on one of the couches meant for Яursts to rest
“She’s nothing but a woman throwing herself at him.” Their laughter grew bolder, fueled by Trevor’s earlier words.
But she just picked up the champagne next to her and took a sip.
A moment later, a woman came over and sat beside her.
Cilve’s lips curled into a cold smile.
Here it came.
*I’ll never understand how some women can be so cheap,” the woman said moldingly. Shkpulled out a compact, pretending to touch up her makeup. “Throwing herself at Mr. Horton like that. Does she have no shame? After all, she’s the one who caused his mother’s death.”
Her voice, sharp and cutting, was loud enough for all the other socialites nearby to heat.
“Exactly,” anotherchimed in “That scandal back then was huge. Who’d have thought she’d dare come crawling back to him after getting out of prison? Guess some prople are shameless beyond reason.
Clive was long past being affected by this kind of talk she’d come tonight with one goal, which was to finish the job Trevor gave her, then leave with Solana..
She looked over at Trevor, who was chatting with a group of businessmen. She figured he was probably trying to pair her off with some old and ugly guy, someone Like Percy, maybe.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
As long as she could get solana back, she’d pay any price.
Even if it meant her lite.
