Chapter 318
Jonathan suddenly spoke on the way to the City Hall to finalize the divorce. “You and Julian … “§
“None of your business,” I interrupted him.§
He gave a bitter laugh and fell silent.
Then, the car radio was suddenly interrupted by a news alert. “This morning, a woman was spotted attempting to jump from the roof of the Zander Corporation building, tearfully accusing the Zanders of abandoning her after using her.“{
Jonathan’s face instantly turned ashen.
“It is reported that the woman’s daughter is pregnant and claims the child belongs to Zander Corporation heir, Jonathan Zander … “I
I turned to look at Jonathan and saw that he was staring intently at his phone screen.
It showed photos sent by his secretary of the scene, Nora, standing precariously on the rooftop. Her expression twisted with anger.
The wail of sirens pierced the air and the area outside the police tape was swarming with onlookers and reporters.
As soon as Jonathan exited the car, he was surrounded by flashing lights.§
“Mr. Jonathan Zander, how do you respond to the allegations of Miss Wendy Stevens‘ pregnancy?“}
“Will the Zanders acknowledge this child? Have you and your wife already divorced? Or is this a case of a mistress forcing her way in?” Jonathan pushed past the reporters with a dark expression and dragged me towards the elevator.
His palms were sweaty, but he held my wrist tightly.§
“Let go,” I said coldly.§
He seemed to snap out of a daze and released me, his voice hoarse. “Sorry… I just… “¶
“A life is at stake. I understand,” I interrupted him sarcastically. “No need to explain.“}
After hearing about Nora, he immediately asked the driver to turn around.
Impatient with the repeated delays to our divorce, I didn’t offer him even a hint of a pleasant expression.
In the short ride up the elevator, Jonathan’s phone rang three times.§
mediately! The media is already
He finally answered the last call. Even I could hear Dean’s furious roar. “Get this under control live–streaming! If she jumps, the stock price will plummet tomorrow!”
A biting wind howled on the rooftop. Nora stood at the edge, her makeup smeared with tears.
Seeing Jonathan, she immediately shrieked, “Jonathan! You heartless bastard! My daughter is pregnant with your child and you want to remarry this slut?”
The reporters‘ cameras all swiveled towards me.
Jonathan instinctively stepped in front of me. “Nora, please come down.“)
“I won’t!” Nora screamed hysterically, waving her arms wildly. “You have to promise to marry my daughter today publicly! Otherwise, I’ll jump! I’ll let everyone know how the Zanders bully us, helpless mother and daughter!“}
As the police tried to approach, Nora immediately took another half–step towards the edge, causing the onlookers to gasp in alarm.§ Jonathan’s back was already soaked with sweat, his suit clinging to his skin. He glanced back at me, his eyes filled with conflict. “Promise her,” I said calmly.”
“Daphne … “%
‘I said, promise her,” my voice was as cold as ice. “We were going to get divorced, anyway.”
It was a completely unwarranted disaster for me. I didn’t want to be labelled as someone who drove a mistress’s mother to suicide after our divorce.2
Jonathan’s Adam’s apple bobbed a few times before he finally turned to Nora. “Okay, I promise you. Can you come down now?”
Nora smiled triumphantly and, with the help of the police, climbed shakily back over the railing.
Reporters swarmed forward and microphones and cameras instantly engulfed Jonathan
I turned and walked towards the elevator. Behind me, Jonathan’s anxious voice called out, “Daphne! Wait!“%
But the elevator doors had already closed.8
Wendy was resting in bed and the morning sickness left her weak and exhausted.
Her phone suddenly rang. A live–stream link from her best friend made her sit up straight.
“Mom?” She stared at the screen, her face paling as she watched her mother’s hysterical display.
