Melissa thrashed and screamed, “Justin, you’re insane!“}
Justin stood a short distance away, hands tucked into his pockets, watching them being dragged into the car, his expression devoid of emotion.
“Don’t worry,” he said airily. “I’m not going to kill anyone.“}]
“Just sending you back to the pigsty. Three days of hunger should do it; just don’t die on me.“}
The black car sped away, Melissa’s shrill cries fading into the wind.
Justin remained where he was, silently staring at the necklace in his hand.
He knew this small act of revenge wasn’t nearly enough for her.”
Still, he was willing to pay back every bit of it, little by little, for her.
I didn’t even realize the necklace I’d been thinking about day and night had somehow ended up back in Justin’s hands. However, I didn’t have the energy to question how.
My mind was utterly consumed by the stark black words on the white background of the medical report.
I sat on the edge of the bed, my limbs tense, my eyes glued to one line on the report. Pregnancy Test: Positive.”

My heart skipped a beat. My fingers trembled as I set the report aside, but my mind was still completely blank.”
It had already been a month. I had no idea how I’d even gotten through it.
Iraised my hand and touched my belly. It was so flat that it seemed unreal, but some places seemed to have changed.
It looked like those faint abs I had worked so hard for this past month were about to disappear.
I laughed through misty eyes. The emotions tangled inside me were impossible to name.”
My cycle had always been scarily regular. Even being one day late would put me on high alert.”
This morning, I’d woken up feeling off and after a quick check, I’d rushed to the hospital. When the test results came out, I stood in the hallway, laughing and crying simultaneously.

The family doctor said, his masked eyes crinkling into a smile as if genuinely happy for me.”
I thanked him and walked back to the ward with light steps.}
As I opened the door, I saw Jackson lying quietly in bed, just like always. His face was peaceful, his long lashes casting faint shadows.”
I tiptoed, sat beside him and couldn’t help leaning close to his ear. My voice was soft, almost playful.”

The moment I said “baby,” my nose stung again. I gently placed my hand over my still–flat belly.
“Soon, I won’t need you anymore. Time to say goodbye,” I joked with a mischievous smile.
For the past month, I’ve treated him like my diary, taking advantage of the fact that he couldn’t wake up. Every day, I talk to him about my worries, my childhood, how I used to eat dinner alone, how a teacher mocked me in middle school for having the worst grades and how I once rescued a stray cat only to have my parents yell at me to throw it away.
I’d never told anyone these things.
When I grew up, I never had a real friend I could open up to.
Maybe that’s why the more I spoke, the easier it became.}
He couldn’t wake up, couldn’t interrupt, couldn’t scold me. So, I got used to talking to him like this. He became my safe space.
In fact, I sometimes felt I was most at ease when he couldn’t talk back.”
