Chapter 250
The hospital room was quiet.
I sat at the edge of the bed, fidgeting with the hem of my shirt.
Jackson was propped up against the headboard beside me. He still looked pale, but his clear, deep eyes were locked on me without blinking.
“Don’t stare at me like that, “I muttered, glancing away. Despite myself, my face started to burn.
Now that his eyes were open, his handsome face had taken on a warmth almost too much to handle.
That man didn’t say anything. He smiled at me, soft and gentle, like a feather brushing my heart.”
My mind started to wander.}
Would I have chosen him if Jackson hadn’t been in a coma?!
I mean, who can say no to a good–looking guy?
“I was just thinking.” I started to speak but immediately stopped because I realized how ridiculous I sounded.”
“What were you thinking about?” His voice was low and raspy, thick with the sound of someone who’d just woken up, oddly sexy
somehow.
I shook my head. “Nothing. Just once the baby’s born, we should probably get a divorce. I don’t think I’m cut out to be your wife.“}
This marriage was never built on love.
I agreed to it for a reason. There was a contract and I needed the money.
I lowered my head, too afraid to look at his face. But then, I felt a soft touch on the back of my hand.”
He held me.§
His fingertips were incredible, but his grip was firm and steady.}]
His voice was barely above a whisper. “Thank you, wifey.”
I froze and slowly looked up at him.
“My world was nothing but darkness for the past seven years,” he said quietly. “I could hear things, but I couldn’t open my eyes. No one talked to me. No one cared whether I was even still here.”
I was stunned.
“But then you showed up,” he went on. “You talked to me every day. You complained, scolded me, sang songs and told childhood stories. You said you had no one to trust, so you treated me like a comatose guy, like your personal diary. At that time, I just kept thinking. I want to wake up. I want to see what you look like.”
“When you spoke, it felt like the world finally had some color again.”
My throat tightened. I hadn’t expected him to remember all those silly things I used to say.”
Flustered, I waved my hands. “I was just making stuff up, okay? I was bored and talking nonsense.“}
“Mm.” He smiled gently. “Made up or not, I liked listening to you.”
I was utterly speechless.
The next second, I was gently pulled into an embrace.
His hug wasn’t strong. That man was still recovering, but there was something heartfelt about it.
“Don’t divorce me, okay?” he whispered into my hair. “Let’s try. Let’s raise this baby together.”
My heart skipped a beat.
I used to think marriage was just a means to an end, a tool, a transaction. However, his words suddenly made me feel like I actually mattered.”
I raised my head, meeting his eyes.}
Those eyes held a foxlike slyness yet also contained a youthful softness.
His smile was perfectly timed, as if knowing I was about to fall, making my heart pound wildly.
“Are you serious?” My voice was very soft, almost inaudible.
“Of course.” He paused. “The first thing I saw when I woke up was you by my side. What I thought in my heart was, thankfully, I didn’t give
up.”
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Ultimately, I couldn’t fight the part that wanted to believe him.}
“Okay.” I nodded.}
The light in his eyes suddenly brightened.”
I thought, perhaps I had gambled on my life once more.
