“I don’t want you to catch a cold,” Sebastian said softly.
I remained seated and didn’t move.
Sebastian was so close that I could feel the warmth of his breath brush against my ear. From the way he gently removed a fallen leaf from my hair, it was as if he were handling something precious.
“Kylie! Kylie!” Suddenly, I heard Lucas‘ heart–wrenching cry from outside the gates.
As fewer bodyguards were on duty at night, there was no one to stop Lucas from entering the grounds. He stumbled into the garden.
Lucas looked so thin that he was almost unrecognizable, and his eyes were bloodshot. “Kylie, I’m sorry! I know what I did was wrong! It was my fault! I shouldn’t have asked you to put up with that mess!”
I didn’t respond. Meanwhile, Sebastian walked toward Lucas, causing the latter’s expression to shift. “Kylie! Who’s this?”
Sebastian immediately stood in front of me. Then, he landed a heavy punch on Lucas. “This is for Kylie.”
He gave Lucas another blow. “This is for her unborn baby. How could you hurt her like that?”
Lucas wiped the bloodstains away from his face before throwing himself at my feet. “Kylie, I know what I did was wrong! Just come home with me, okay? I’m really sorry! Let me make it up to you properly!” He held onto my leg and refused to let go.
“Home?” I sneered. “What home? Lucas, have you forgotten that we’re already divorced? You already signed the papers.”
Lucas grew pale. “Kylie, you’re just mad at me, right?”
“Lucas, in the past, you always sided with Megan. I thought you guys were just really close, but look what you did! You asked me to take the fall for her. You even asked me to abort our baby.” I caressed my stomach as I recalled my terminated pregnancy.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I continued, “Did you know? I actually couldn’t bear to get rid of the baby. It was your mother who killed them.”
I paused. “Your mother locked me in the family mausoleum. I had to stay under the scorching sun that day. That was how I lost the baby!”
The truth hit Lucas hard, and he slumped to the floor. Even when the bodyguards dragged him away, he was still screaming my name.
After that night, Lucas seemed to have lost his mind. He came to Floyd Residence every day. He was either sobbing outside the gates or drunkenly trying to force entry.
Although the bodyguards beat him until he was black and blue, he still stubbornly waited outside the house every day.
One day, the news reported that Abigail was suddenly hospitalized for a stroke. The photos and videos of Lucas made him seem like he had aged ten years overnight.
Later, I heard Lucas frequented bars all day to get drunk. Eventually, Megan found Lucas and smashed a wine bottle on his head. The glass shards got into his right eye, causing him to go blind in that eye.
Megan was jailed for intentional injury. Even Johnson Group declared bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, I started taking over Dad’s business. During the annual meeting, I stood under the spotlight as I calmly gave my speech.
Sebastian was seated in the first row in the audience. He stared at me with rapt attention, his gaze filled with pride. After I finished my speech, he got up and draped his blazer over my shoulders.
As soon as I walked out of the conference room, I noticed a hunched figure standing in the shadows near the door. He wore sunglasses, and his right eye socket was hollow.
It was Lucas. He opened his mouth to say something, but he dared not utter a word.
“Stop looking at him.” Sebastian suddenly grabbed my hand, his grip firm enough to hurt me a little.
His words made me laugh, and I reached out to ease his scowl. “We’re getting married tomorrow. Still afraid that I’ll run away?”
While Sebastian’s scowl eased slightly, he still stubbornly held my hand and refused to let go.
A few days ago, Sebastian had gotten on one knee in the garden. It was his first time confessing his feelings for me,
Back then, after Sebastian learned that I was getting married, he ran off to Marope and almost lost his life In a gunfight. He said he only found a reason to live after getting my call.
“Kylie.” He placed my hand on his chest, letting me feel his strong heartbeat. “I’ll never let you go in this lifetime.”
I kissed his forehead. The sunset in the distance was perfect.
