As I wanted to walk around the orphanage, a car suddenly stopped in front of the gate and a man got out of the car. The man I have known for the past seven years, Shaun Howard.
I was about to go back in when I saw him running towards me when our eyes met, but his hand quickly stopped me.
“Carmen, I’m sorry. Please don’t avoid me, please listen to my explanation, okay?” Shaun begged me.
“Let go of me. I don’t need any explanation from you. Get out of here,” I said.
“No, don’t be like that, okay? I know I was wrong, I’ve realized that I’ve been fooled by Kathryn, so forgive me. Tell me what I need to do so that you’ll forgive me.
“Don’t stay away from me like this. I can’t live without you,” Shaun explained quickly.M
I raised an eyebrow as I sneered, “So, she had been caught?“N
Shaun’s eyes were bloodshot as he tried to answer my question, “Yes, Carmen, I know everything. It’s all my fault. I know that the doctor was bribed by Kathryn. I also know if Isaiah… our son has already died.§
“I trusted Kathryn wrongly. I thought she was the one who loved me the most. I thought you were with me for money and status. I was angry, so I treated you like that.”
Suddenly, I chuckled sarcastically, “Shaun, you are wrong about two things. First, when I married into your Howard Family and saved you, your Howard Family was being oppressed by other enemies and was like a lost dog. How could you have any money? What status do you have?
“Second, I didn’t marry someone because of their wealth and status, but because I owe the family I marry. You think too highly of yourself.”
I guessed Shaun had heard everything about Kathryn and finally realized how foolish he was, but I was not that kind of woman who would be taken in by his crocodile cries.
He looked a little embarrassed as he responded, “Carmen, you are right. I said the wrong thing. I really love you. Come back with me.
“I will make it up to you. That bowl of contraceptive medicine… I will definitely find someone to cure you. We will still have children.”
I dodged his hand again and looked at him mockingly, “Make up for it? How are you going to make up for it? Can you turn back time and let Isaiah appear in front of me alive and kicking?
“Shaun, when I loved you, you betrayed me and hurt me so much. Now that I have left you for good, you appear again and say these meaningless words. Are you trying to destroy my life? Why are you always so selfish?“M
Shaun shook his head in fear and explained, “No, that’s not what I meant. Carmen, I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.””
“The reason why I married into your Howard Family was because your grandfather begged me to cure your depression due to losing Kathryn and your parents. I agreed to it only because he helped me, so after these seven years, I think I have paid him back enough.”
“I never loved you fully before, that was because I got used to it. But now my hatred for you is greater than my love, so don’t expect you to have me again, not to mention a child!
“So, Shaun, go now. If you have the time, you better hold a funeral for Isaiah as an apology for hurting him even after he was turned to ashes.
“Until the end he tried not to cry in pain because he was afraid you would be angry, but you were cruel enough not to give him painkillers. So, apologize to him, even though he may forgive you or not, just like I hate you right now.

After saying that, I stopped looking at him and turned to walk towards the house.
I intended to get some fresh air, but it seemed like the air outside was polluted because it was also inhaled by the person I hated the most. So, I chose to lock myself in the orphanage again for a while.
One day, my friend brought news that the old man of the Howard Family had passed away and all of the Howard Family’s businesses had unknown circumstances and all of them declared bankruptcy in just a few months. Debt collectors trampled through the door of the Howard Family, as if they had lost all their luck.
As for Mr. Howard’s grandson Shaun, he disappeared on the day the Howard Family went bankrupt. It was said that he had a broken leg and no one knew where he went.
Only the children in the orphanage knew that there was a lame beggar outside the gate all the time.N
But on the same day my friend gave me the news, a lame old beggar froze to death on the road and his body was eaten by wild dogs. Just like the day he appeared, he came empty–handed and he left empty–handed.
