Chapter 7%
“Mum, I just want to teach Joanne a lesson. As a royal embalmer, her blood is dirty and so is Alex’s. They both want to protect the baby in my belly, just like I want to protect my unborn child. What’s wrong with that?“%
“Where is Joanne? Where is she? I want to confront her face–to–face! This woman lies to us all the time. She is not a good person at all! I’ll call her now and make her explain herself to you!“%
But no matter how many times he dialed the number, no one answered on the other end His mother–in–law looked at him, her disappointment clear. After everything, she finally understood that the Orville Family was completely ruined.
It was all over.”
Charles was about to dial the number for the tenth time when his mother–in–law reached out, holding his trembling hand. She pulled out Alex’s death certificate from her bag.
“Don’t call. Joanne won’t pick up your calls again. Charles, Alex is gone. I’m not lying to you, Charles.”?
“Even more than Joanne, the Orville Family has been gone all these years without her. It’s over. You knew this would happen when you chose to marry me. I have no idea what really happened to you, but the choice has been made. You need to know that there’s no turning back.”
“Since you didn’t go to Alex’s memorial, go to the memorial in the garden and give him a rose. You’re Alex’s father, so please don’t let Alex die with a broken heart.“”
Tears began to fall, wetting the paper drop by drop.
Charles snatched the death certificate and stared at it for a long time. He tried to find any signs of it being forged. He wanted to find a mistake, something that would prove Joanne was behind this, but there was nothing.
Instead, there was an official stamp on it that made it clear that the certificate was indeed real.
It came from the same hospital where he had taken Annette for a prenatal checkup. A wave of panic washed over him, rushing through every nerve in his body Charles stared at the certificate, his eyes wide, as he mumbled to himself in disbelief.
“No, this can’t be real. It’s fake. Alex is in the hospital, I asked. A whole–body blood transfusion is a minor operation. It’s impossible for anyone to die!”
“It’s Joanne. She messed with me, trying to make me angry about taking Annette home. Right? Tell me, mom!”
“Where is Joanne? I want to find her. She must have taken the child away.”
As he spoke, Charles turned and started walking out the door. Annette’s face instantly changed. She quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
“Ma’am, even if you’re on Joanne’s side, you can’t joke about the child’s life!“}
“If Charles gets angry, who will be the head of the Orville Family?”
Annette wasn’t worried about Charles. Rather, she was worried that no one in the Orville Family would respect her. If Charles left, the next person to be silenced and thrown out of the Orville Family would be her!/
She had just returned from abroad and finally got Charles back. She couldn’t let this happen. Joanne was not worth dying over. What she needed to do now was make Charles believe in her.
Seeing that Charles was still not reacting, Annette spoke again, “Mrs. Orville, it’s not that I don’t believe you, it’s just that the curse sounds too ridiculous. It’s been so many years since the country was founded. How can there still be feudal superstitions?”
“It was just a coincidence that Joanne came into the Orville Family. If they hadn’t gotten married, the Orville Family wouldn’t have fallen apart.”
She had said this many times before. Every time, Charles‘ feelings for Joanne would weaken a little. This time, she repeated the same words, hoping to lower Joanne’s importance in his eyes. She waited for Charles‘ firm response.”
But this time, she was met with a slap. The sound was sharp and loud. Annette’s cheek immediately turned red and swollen as her eyes widened in disbelief.”
“Charles, did you just hit me?”
