Chapter 17
Joanna laughed and shook her head. “What’s the point of dragging it out? Why not just divorce him and move on to someone better?”
“Now you’re talking!” Sydney slapped the table again, her eyes sparkling as she looked at Joanna. “Joanna, you’ve finally wisened up!”
She added enthusiastically, “With your looks and personality, any man would be lucky to have you. Only a blind fool like Jeremy couldn’t see that.”
When Joanna didn’t respond, Sydney asked, “But if you divorce Jeremy now, will the Hansen family accept your baby?”
Joanna nodded. “They will. Wendy even wanted me to move back to the Hansen residence during my pregnancy, but I declined. As for Nadine, Wendy will never accept her.”
Sydney’s brow furrowed as she processed this information.
“A penny for your thoughts?” Joanna asked, knowing her friend might appear carefree but was actually quite shrewd and fiercely protective.
Sydney replied, “If Nadine is getting a uterus transplant to have Jeremy’s baby, what if she tries something with your baby?”
After all, Joanna had caused Nadine to lose both her baby and uterus years ago. Hence,
there was bound to be resentment.
Joanna had already considered this possibility but hadn’t expected Nadine to pursue a transplant to carry Jeremy’s child. A sharp glint flashed in her eyes as she nodded. “She probably will.‘
Sydney was worried. “What are we going to do? It feels like she has the upper hand. We can’t just wait around and do nothing!”
“Don’t worry. I’ll be careful,” Joanna said, assuring her.
The next day at the Hansen Group headquarters, Tessa Grover, a junior secretary, delivered an express envelope that required Jeremy’s personal attention as soon as he
arrived at his office.
After being yelled at the previous afternoon, Marie had been avoiding him. Whenever something important came up, she made sure the other junior secretaries handled it instead.
Jeremy hadn’t been sleeping well for several nights, especially the previous one when he barely slept at all. It wasn’t that he did not want to sleep, but he simply couldn’t.

Even though he had always maintained separate bedrooms from Joanna, he used to fall asleep quickly after their intimacy. Now, lying in the same bed, he couldn’t sleep at all. He had thought he would adjust to Joanna’s absence within a few days, but instead, things were getting worse. Leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed, he massaged his throbbing temples–a result of several sleepless nights.
When he heard Tessa’s voice, he opened his
eyes and glanced at the envelope. “What is it?”
Tessa kept her head down, avoiding his gaze. “I don’t know, sir. It’s labeled for your personal attention only.”
Given Jeremy’s short temper these days, everyone in the office was walking on eggshells, afraid of being the next person to set him off. Marie had always been one of his favorites, but even she was worried.
Jeremy frowned as he took the envelope and tore it open. The moment he saw “Divorce Agreement” printed boldly across the top of the document, his already pounding headache worsened.
