Chapter 23
“Forcing you to donate your uterus?” festina claimed in shock. “Why would they do that?
“My brother wants to get married, but we have no money”
As the woman spoke, tears began to fall. “Someone is willing to pay 20 thousand dollars.
for my uterus, so they’re forcing me to sell it. They want to use the money for my brother’s wedding”
Joanna stared at her in disbelief, and her eyes widened into saucers.
To marry off a son, they would go so far as to force their daughter to sell her uterus. How could a mother
All of a sudden, Joanna was reminded of her om parents and brother.
Weren’t they the same?
For the sake of her brother, her parents would absolutely do the same thing.
“Please help me! I’m only 22. I don’t want to lose my uterus. How would I ever get married and have children? I would never have the chance to be a mother. My boyfriend would definitely leave me…”
Seeing Joanna remain silent, the woman clutched her hand tightly. Her plea was laced with pitiful sobs.
No uterus meant no children. No chance to be a mother…
As the woman’s words echoed in her ears, she unexpectedly recalled something Sydney had mentioned a few days ago. She said Nadine was planning to undergo a uterus transplant.
Where did Nadine’s donor uterus come from? Did it have anything to do with the woman before her eyes?
Whether it was a sense of shared trauma or something else, Joanna looked at the woman and asked, “What’s your name?”
“Joy Holm,” the woman quickly replied. “Like the joy of moving to a new home”
Joanna nodded. “Why haven’t you called the police about your mother and brother forcing you to donate your uterus?”
Joy shook her head, sobbing even harder. “I tried, but they found out. They beat me up locked me away. If I hadn’t escaped before they managed to drug me, I’d probably be in the hospital getting my uterus removed.”
and
Joanna frowned. “Do you trust me?”
Joy nodded emphatically. “Yes, of course! You‘ definitely a good person
“Great.” Joanna returned a firm nod. “First, lets get you to the hospital to check if you‘ hurt anywhere. Leave the rest to me for now.”
Joy gripped her hand tightly and looked at her with eyes filled with gratitude. She was so overwhelmed that she didn’t know what to say
At the hospital, Joanna called Elliot whille joy was in the examination room. He was just as stunned to hear Joy’s story.
She then asked him to launch investigations to verify everything, Joy told her.
“Also, Elliot, please help me find out where Nadine’s donor uterus is coming from And when the operation is scheduled for,” she added.
“Why? Do you suspect…” Elliot’s voice trailed off, his voice sharp with realization, “Damn it! How vicious can that two–faced bitch get? Alright, I’ll have someone investigate immediately.”
“Thanks.”
The examining doctor came to report on Joy’s condition. Thanks to Dominic slamming on the brakes in time, she hadn’t been hit. She had merely fallen in her panic and scraped her knees.
After her wounds were treated, Joanna wasn’t sure where to take her. Since she couldn’t yet confirm that her story was entirely true, she decided to take her out for dinner. That would buy Elliot some time to provide her with an update.
The information wasn’t hard to obtain, and Elliot’s team boasted optimal efficiency. Before they finished their meal, Joanna received his call.
Joy hadn’t lied–everything she’d said was the truth.
