Chapter 24
Not only that, but Joanna’s suspicion about Nadine was right. She was indeed the buyer willing to spend so thousand dollars on Joy’s uterus for a transplant.
Over the phone, Elliot angrily cursed Nadine out, calling her a stinking pile of dog shit. Meanwhile, Joanna remained rather composed,
“Joanna, we should call the police. Organ trafficking is illegal. Let’s make sure Nadine’s reputation is ruined, and she ends up in jail. That idiot Hansen can then see for himself the true nature of his so–called perfect love.” Elliot was absolutely furning
Joanna let out a light chuckle. “You said yourself that Nadine used a false identity to arrange the uterus transplant. What use would it be calling the police?”
Nadine wasn’t foolish enough to use her real identity for illegal organ trading and transplantation.
“She’s not stupid, but the police aren’t clueless either. If I could figure this out so easily, the authorities wouldn’t even have to try hard,” he argued.
She nodded in agreement. “True, the police aren’t clueless. But remember–Nadine has Jeremy’s backing. Do you think he would stand by and let her reputation plunge? Do you think he’d watch her go to jail? Don’t forget why she’s trying to get a uterus transplant.”
She was doing it to give him a child.
“Fuck!” Elliot groaned when it dawned on him. “What a disgusting pair of scumbags!”
He then asked, “So, what’s your plan?”
Joanna lowered her gaze and fell into deep thought. “Nadine has money. If she can’t buy Joy’s uterus, she’ll try to buy someone else’s.”
“That’s for sure.”
“That’s why we need to address the root cause of the problem.”
“The root cause? How are we going to do that?” he pushed curiously.
“I’ll tell you when I’m back.”
After ending the call, Joanna returned to the table.
Seeing her, Joy set down her utensils and looked up at her expectantly.
“Are you
full?” Joanna asked her.
Joy nodded, her face still somewhat uneasy.
“I don’t think you can go home tonight. Do you have some other safe place to stay?”

Joanna asked again.
This time, Joy shook her head. “I don’t have many friends. And if I went to anyone I know, my mother and brother would surely find me.”
“Alright. Come home with me for now, then,” Joanna said decisively.
Putting her in a hotel was too risky. If Nadine’s people found her, all her efforts would be in
vain.
“Thank you. Thank you so much!” Joy was immensely grateful.
Joanna brought Joy back to Maplewood Residences. But her plan wasn’t to let her stay on the 38th floor with her.
When she first invested in Maplewood Residences, she was quite optimistic about the project. On a whim, she purchased five apartments on the 34th to 38th floor under the name of Eterna Group.
Her intuition proved right–two years later, the property’s value had doubled. If she were to sell those five apartments now, she’d easily make at least 300 million dollars.
But she had no intention of doing so. Of the five units, she occupied one, Elliot in another, and some other people in the remaining three.
She had reserved the one on the 34th floor for the housekeeper and driver.
Upon arriving at Maplewood Residences, Joanna arranged for Janet to take Joy to the 34th floor. That way, Janet would take good care of Joy as she rested. She then returned to the 38th floor herself.
When Elliot returned from work, he immediately asked Joanna about Nadine illegally buying a uterus. What was she thinking? How was she planning to deal with it?
“If Nadine can’t have the transplant done domestically, she’ll go abroad,” Joanna stated flatly, pouring him a glass of water.
Especially in certain areas of Southeastern Aurida, where organ trafficking wasn’t uncommon to begin with.
