Chapter 14
Eugene was taken aback for a moment after the call ended. That was the first time Nerissa had hung up on him, and she hadn’t even made things clear. Why had she ended the call? He had no idea where she was!
He called her again, but all he got was a cold, robotic voice. “Sorry. The number you have dialed is unavailable. Please try again later.”
He decided to text her. However, he only saw a single gray tick after sending the messages. His mind went blank. Had Nerissa blocked him everywhere? She’d gotten mad at him in the past, but she’d never once blocked his number.
He was flustered, but anger was also mixed in. So, this really was all because of the baby! He’d explained to her countless times that he had to help make Cassandra’s wishes come true since she had cancer and was his savior. Why couldn’t Nerissa understand that and support him?
But after the anger passed, Eugene felt more terror than anything else. He’d never thought of ending his relationship with Nerissa. Now, however, he had no idea where she was and couldn’t even contact her. How was he going to find her?
Suddenly, he was reminded of Tara. Nerissa had brought him to Tara’s place once for a gathering, and he made his way there based on what he remembered of its location.
When Tara opened the door, she saw Eugene standing at her doorstep, looking unkempt. She had always felt that Nerissa deserved better–after all, the latter had spent years chasing after Eugene, yet he hadn’t reciprocated her feelings.
Still, she’d kept her opinions to herself since Eugene and Nerissa were already together at that point. But since learning the truth behind the canceled wedding from Nerissa, Tara’s displeasure toward Eugene peaked.
She couldn’t understand how there could be such scumbags in the world, and her pent–up frustration erupted at the sight of Eugene standing outside her
apartment.
She said sarcastically, “Well, if it isn’t my bestie’s ex, who decided to repay a woman with his sperm. What brings you here?”
Eugene was stunned. Tara knew about Cassandra’s pregnancy? His heart clenched, but this wasn’t the time to dwell on that. He only wanted to find out what he could about Nerissa. He asked, “Where is Nerissa?”
Tara rolled her eyes. He’d treated Nerissa like she was unimportant when she’d been by his side daily, yet now he wanted to act like he cared about her so much when they were over.
“I don’t know,” Tara said huffily. She moved to shut the door.
Eugene shot out a hand to stop her; she wasn’t in time to react, and his hand got caught between the door and the door frame.
Pain shot through him, and tears formed in his eyes. He clutched his hand, suppressing the pain as he asked stubbornly, “Where is Nerissa? I want to know where she’s gone.”
Tara cursed. She truly couldn’t understand what Eugene was pulling. She snapped, “You already knocked another woman up. Why do you care where Riss has gone?”
Eugene understood everything at her words–she was upset about Cassandra’s pregnancy, too. But he had his reasons for that! And it wasn’t like anything had actually happened between him and Cassandra.
He gave her the same explanation he’d used with Nerissa countless times. “Cassandra saved my life–I only donated my sperm to her to repay her for that. I don’t feel anything else for her. Tell me where Nerissa is so I can explain everything to her.”
Tara sneered at his so–called explanation before spitting in his face. “You want to know where Riss is? Dream on! I won’t let you disturb her! She’s your savior, too! Why haven’t I ever seen you wanting to repay her?”
Eugene was stunned. What was that supposed to mean? When had Nerissa ever saved him? Why didn’t he remember anything?
“Make yourself clear–when has Nerissa ever saved me?” he cried.
