Chapter 15
Tara didn’t expect Eugene to forget something so important. That only made her more indignant on Nerissa’s behalf and scornful of him.
She said sarcastically, “You must have been pretty busy if you could forget about something so important. It happened on New Year’s Day six years ago. It’s bad enough that you didn’t even thank Riss for what she did for you. I can’t believe the way you’ve treated her!”
The more Tara said, the angrier she got. She told Eugene about everything Nerissa had quietly done for him over the past 20 years, as well as how she’d saved him on the dangerous night six years ago. She even showed him photos of Nerissa being hospitalized after saving him.
Eugene had no idea how he left Tara’s apartment. His mind was in a mess, and he felt like his world had collapsed around him. Darkness shrouded him, and no light would ever be able to enter his world.
He clearly remembered Cassandra being the one who had saved him six years ago. How could it actually be Nerissa?
But if Tara was telling the truth and that Nerissa was his savior, that meant he’d had the wrong person this whole time. Even the child in Cassandra’s womb.. It should never have come into existence!
Eugene hurriedly took a cab to the hospital. He wanted to know whether Cassandra really was the one who’d saved him back then. In the car, he racked his brain, trying his best to recall the details of that night.
He remembered being followed on his way back to his dorm. The perpetrator had clamped a hand over his mouth and dragged him into an alley. He’d felt the knife pressed to the back of his waist, so he hadn’t dared to struggle while handing over all his valuables.
Unexpectedly, the perpetrator had stabbed him in the abdomen after taking his money. He’d thought he wouldn’t live to see another day, but a dark figure had appeared out of nowhere and pounced on the perpetrator.
Eugene had called the police with his hands covered in blood. Then, he’d passed out. Cassandra was the first person he’d seen upon waking up, so he’d naturally taken her for his savior.
Yet Tara had just told him that Nerissa was the one who’d saved him. She’d lain unconscious on a hospital bed for three days after also being stabbed by the perpetrator. By the time she’d woken up, Eugene had already been discharged.
Later, Nerissa told Tara that she didn’t want to force Eugene into repaying her for this. That was why she’d never once brought it up.
The more Eugene thought about the situation, the more panicked he felt. He couldn’t imagine what he would do if Nerissa really was his savior. What the hell had he done to her?
Cassandra was surprised to see him when he arrived at the hospital. “Aren’t you and Nerissa supposed to be getting married today, Gene?”
Her gaze landed on the mark on his wrist, and she yelped in surprise. “What happened to your wrist? I’ll get you a doctor!”
“No, it’s fine.” Eugene stopped her, sounding calmer than he’d ever been with her. He asked, “Cassie, are you really my savior?”
He looked into her eyes, not wanting to miss even the most minute change in her expression. She was evidently caught off guard by his question, and a hint of panic flashed in her eyes. Soon, however, she regained her composure.
She said confidently, “Of course I am. I’m the first person you saw when you woke up back then, remember?”
However, Eugene had been watching her closely the whole time. He didn’t miss that initial hint of panic. His heart sank. He knew Cassandra wasn’t his savior.
