CLAIRE’S POV
Ethan gave me a bitter smile. “I once said that if I betrayed you, I’d die. But even if I died now, you wouldn’t feel sad, would you? I’ve applied to participate in the human freezing experiment–for ten years. If I wake up ten years from now, will you give me another chance?”
For the first time in a long while, I looked Ethan straight in the eye. My voice was calm, but my words cut deep. “Don’t put all the blame on me, Ethan.”
I had chosen to freeze myself to keep my promise and to build a new life.
But Ethan’s choice?
It was a ploy. A desperate attempt to guilt me into forgiving him, to manipulate me into Teeling something for him again.
I couldn’t understand where he found such audacity.
“You’re freezing yourself because you’re too scared to die,” I said bluntly, not softening the blow. “If you were willing to die, you would’ve ended it back when the plane crash happened. Instead, you’ve been coming to Iceland every year, putting on this show of devotion.”
Ethan’s decision wasn’t noble. It was calculated.
He’d only made it after seeing my revival succeed, hoping to prove something in front of me -to make me believe he could–endure the same pain I had.
But he would never understand.
He would never grasp the devastation I felt when his betrayal shattered my world and left
me in ruins.
“Belated affection means nothing to me, Ethan,” I said, my voice resolute. “And I’m done
being moved by hollow promises.”
“Ten years?” I let out a humorless laugh. “If you’re serious about making amends, why not freeze yourself for a hundred years?”
With that, I shut the door in his face and threw the property transfer agreement back at him
Lily was my daughter–mine alone. She didn’t need his support, and neither did I.
Later that day, Alex sat at the table as Ethan’s application was in his hands. His face was
tense, conflicted.
As the head researcher of the cryogenic project, he didn’t want to reject a volunteer’s
contribution to science. But as someone who cared deeply for me, he couldn’t shake the unease that Ethan’s actions might still weigh on my life.
After some deliberation, Alex made his choice. He changed Ethan’s freezing duration to one hundred years.
“Claire,” he said gently, “I don’t have to accept his application. I don’t want you to regret

anything said in anger.”
But I shook my head firmly.
“This isn’t about me,” I replied. “It’s his choice to waste his life like this.”
I wouldn’t regret Ethan’s self–pitying decisions. To me, he was already a stranger.
I had no right–or obligation–to interfere with what he chose to do now. Just like I couldn’t
stop him from cheating back then, I wouldn’t stop him from doing this.
“I respect his choices,” I added. “Whatever they are.”
Eventually, Alex approved Ethan’s application.
Before the procedure, Ethan made one last request.
He wanted to see me.
I refused.
Alex later told me that Ethan waited for an entire day and night, hoping I would show up.
When I didn’t, he finally lost hope and proceeded with the freezing.
Before he entered the chamber, he left a letter for me. Alex handed it to me, but I didn’t even glance at it. Instead, I threw it straight into the fireplace, watching the flames devour the paper
until it was nothing but ash.
If Ethan didn’t wake up in a hundred years, it would mean he’d finally kept his word. If he did wake up, he would find himself in a world of unimaginable solitude.
A hundred years was an eternity filled with uncertainties, and no one–not even Ethan–could predict what the future would hold.
As for me, I was just an ordinary person.
Beyond my own life and the happiness of my daughter, nothing else mattered.
And so,
I held Lily in my arms that same evening, her tiny fingers curling around mine. I walked over to the window, pointing up at the vibrant Northern Lights that painted the sky.
Alex joined us, standing quietly by my side.
For a moment, I hesitated. But then, as his hand reached for mine, I let him take it.
This time, I didn’t pull away.
The three of us stood together, huddled beneath the vast expanse of shimmering lights, making silent wishes for the future.
From that moment on, we embraced life fully, leaving the past behind and embracing the future with hope.
The End.
