A few days later, I found myself at a high school reunion.
Though I had lived in New Valley for years, I had never felt the urge to attend one until now.
As we exchanged stories of our younger days, a rare sense of ease washed over me.
When the time came to leave, I reached for my phone to hail a cab, but before I could dial, a voice interrupted me.
“Heather, let me give you a ride.”
I turned to find Conrad Pierce, my old deskmate from high school, standing beside me.
He had always been a solitary figure, a quiet achiever who seemed to drift in and out of our circle, yet he had been nothing but kind to me. I remembered how, after evening study sessions,
he would stay back to help me with my homework.
I had heard that he hadn’t attended the reunions before, but for some unknown reason, he
had flown in from Germany this time.
As his car pulled up in front of my apartment, I saw a figure standing ahead, frozen in place.
It was Trent.
Somehow, he had tracked me down to my doorstep.
The moment Trent saw me, his eyes sparkled as if he’d unearthed a rare treasure.
“You’re finally willing to see me!”
But his joy quickly turned to suspicion when his gaze fell past me. He froze, locking eyes
with Conrad.
“Who is he?”

Before I could respond, Trent’s expression darkened. He stepped forward, voice sharp with possessiveness.
“Heather is my wife. Stay away from her.”
I frowned, my voice cool and unyielding.
“Trent, stop being ridiculous. We never even registered our marriage. After we broke up, we have nothing to do with each other.”
His face tightened, but he shook his head, desperation creeping into his eyes. He reached out to me, his words desperate.
“I know you’re still angry with me. I can wait, no matter how long it takes for you to forgive
me.”
“But you’ll always be my wife. Seeing you out with another man, do you know how much that hurts me?”
Before he could touch me, Conrad stepped forward, blocking his path.
“If you have something to say, say it from there. Don’t lay a hand on her.”
Jealousy flared in Trent’s eyes as he sized up Conrad, a sneer curling at his lips.
“And who do you think you are? Do you even come close to me? Do you know Heather once had an abortion for me?”
A sharp buzzing echoed in my head, drowning out the world around me.
I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails nearly broke the skin.
The wind howled in my ears, and everything around me felt distant.
In the next instant, Conrad’s fist collided with Trent’s face, the impact sharp and satisfying. He grabbed Trent by the collar, his cold gaze unyielding.

“You think that’s something to boast about?”
Trent wiped the blood from his mouth, glaring with defiance as he swung back with a punch
of his own.
“You dare lay a hand on my woman and hit me?”
I rushed forward, desperate to stop the madness, and yanked them apart, positioning myself protectively in front of Conrad.
Trent froze, his fist hovering in midair.
“Heather, I’m bleeding because of him, and you don’t feel even a bit
sorry for me?”
I spoke with disdain, my words cutting through the tension like a knife.
“Why should I feel sorry?”
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Not only do I not feel sorry, but I think he didn’t hit you hard enough.”
His eyes dimmed, his shoulders sagging as if the weight of his regret was too much to bear
“Heather, I’ll ask you this once: after everything we’ve been through, can you really walk away from it all?”
I scoffed, my voice dripping with contempt.
“What are you even saying? There’s nothing between us anymore, nothing left to let go of.”
“If you have even a shred of self–respect left, stop clinging to me like some parasite.”
“I don’t ever want to see you again.”
Despair clouded Trent’s eyes, and his arms fell limply to his sides. He mumbled, barely audible, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. I really was wrong…‘

But the only answer he received was the firm, unwavering curve of my back as I turned
away.
Two years later, I married Conrad in Germany.
It turned out he’d secretly liked me since high school. He’d flown all the way back for the reunion the moment he heard I was attending.
Not long after, I found myself pregnant, and soon enough, I was holding a beautiful little girl
in my arms.
When she turned five, we returned to the country to visit family.
During a brief layover at New Valley Airport, I had just picked up some food from
McDonald’s when I heard a voice that sent a shiver down my spine.
“Heather!”
I froze, my heart skipping a beat, before slowly looking toward the source of the sound.
There stood Trent, eyes wide, disbelief written all over his face, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Heather, I knew you’d come back to New Valley…”
I lowered my gaze, my face cold and indifferent as I turned away.
My daughter, her tiny feet stumbling, ran toward me, arms stretched wide.
“Mama, hug!”
I smiled, lifting her into my arms, the warmth of her small body grounding me.
She nibbled on her fingers and curiously glanced behind me.
“Mama, who’s that uncle? Why did he run away when he saw me?”
