CLAIRE’S POV
“This is the cryogenic lab, right?” Ethan’s voice wavered as he spoke. “You participated in the experiment, didn’t you? That’s how you paused your life for five years.”
I didn’t respond.
“Claire,” he continued, his voice cracking, “is this what you meant by leaving me forever? But
now that I’ve found you, doesn’t it prove fate still wants us to be together?”
I held his gaze for a moment, then shook my head firmly.
“No,” I said quietly but resolutely.
I had made my choice five years ago, and I wasn’t going to backtrack now. I had already left
than behind, and now there was no reason to accept him back into my life.
“Is this because of Madeline?” he blurted out, his voice rising in desperation. “I swear, I
didn’t know she’d dare provoke you like that! I cut her off a long time ago!”
He ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “I was out of my mind back then. I gave in to temptation, okay? But Claire, you can’t sentence me to death for one mistake! Haven’t
five years of torment been enough punishment for me?”
Ethan fell to his knees in front of me, his sobs racking his entire body.
But my expression didn’t change. I remained calm, my voice steady and unwavering.
“Ethan, you still don’t understand,” I said, my tone laced with quiet finality.
“It was never about Madeline,” I continued. “Even without her, there would’ve been someone
else. She wasn’t your only betrayal, was she?”
Ethan’s face crumpled, but I pressed on. “I left because you changed, Ethan. Not because of anyone else. I’ve moved on–I’m doing well now. Please don’t disturb my life anymore.”
But Ethan refused to
accept my words. He clung to my legs like a desperate man drowning
at sea. “What about our child? The child is innocent! She can’t grow up without a father! Claire,
please, believe me–I’ll never betray you again. I’ll love you and our child with everything I have!”
Before he could finish, Alex came storming out, his boots crunching loudly in the snow.
“Mr. Carter,” Alex said sharply, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. “What
I think you’re doing to my wife?”
Ethan stumbled back as Alex approached, but then he retaliated with a punch, catching Alex off guard.
“Your wife? Claire is my wife!” Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. “You subjected my wife and daughter to that dangerous experiment–I haven’t even held you accountable for that yet!”
I couldn’t help but scoff at Ethan’s shamelessness.
“The divorce papers have already taken effect, Ethan,” I said coolly. “And your wife is already dead.”

Reaching for Alex’s hand, I added, “As someone unrelated, what gives you the right to hold anyone accountable here?”
Without another word, I turned and walked away, my hand in Alex’s, leaving Ethan alone in the snow, kneeling in defeat.
But Ethan didn’t disappear right away.
For weeks after that encounter, he camped outside my house daily. He brought gifts for Lily and food he remembered I used to love, but I refused everything.
I treated him like air, walking past him without so much as a glance.
He often ran into Alex, who visited regularly to check on me and Lily. The resentment in Ethan’s eyes grew with each passing day as he watched Alex and me together, but so did his
onfusion.
As time went on, Alex started staying overnight.
“I don’t trust Ethan,” he said one evening, his tone serious. “He seems desperate enough to try something reckless, and I don’t want to leave you or Lily unprotected.”
I didn’t argue.
Over time, Alex’s quiet, steady presence began to chip away at the walls I’d built around my heart. His care, his support–it all softened me in ways I hadn’t expected. Slowly, I let myself
entertain the idea of a future with him.
And then, just like that, Ethan disappeared.
At first, I thought he’d finally given up, that he’d come to terms with the reality of our
situation.
But less than a month later, he reappeared at my doorstep, clutching a document in his trembling hands.
“Claire,” he said, his voice steady but heavy with sorrow.
“I know there’s nothing I can do to make things right. Everything I own–it’s all yours and
Lily’s now.” He held out the document–a property transfer agreement.
“I’ve thought long and hard about this,” he continued, his voice breaking. “The mistakes made, the consequences I caused–I should bear all of it. And the suffering you went through–l
should feel it too.”

anything said in anger.”
But I shook my head firmly.
“This isn’t about me,” I replied. “It’s his choice to waste his life like this.”
I wouldn’t regret Ethan’s self–pitying decisions. To me, he was already a stranger.
I had no right–or obligation–to interfere with what he chose to do now. Just like I couldn’t stop him from cheating back then, I wouldn’t stop him from doing this.
“I respect his choices,” I added. “Whatever they are.”
Eventually, Alex approved Ethan’s application.
Before the procedure, Ethan made one last request.
He wanted to see me.
I refused.
Alex later told me that Ethan waited for an entire day and night, hoping I would show up.
When I didn’t, he finally lost hope and proceeded with the freezing.
Before he entered the chamber, he left a letter for me. Alex handed it to me, but I didn’t even
glance at it. Instead, I threw it straight into the fireplace, watching the flames devour the paper
until it was nothing but ash.
If Ethan didn’t wake up in a hundred years, it would mean he’d finally kept his word. If he did wake up, he would find himself in a world of unimaginable solitude.
A hundred years was an eternity filled with uncertainties, and no one–not even Ethan–could
predict what the future would hold.
As for me, I was just an ordinary person.
Beyond my own life and the happiness of my daughter, nothing else mattered.
And so, I held Lily in my arms that same evening, her tiny fingers curling around mine. I walked over to the window, pointing up at the vibrant Northern Lights that painted the sky.
Alex joined us, standing quietly by my side.
For a moment, I hesitated. But then, as his hand reached for mine, I let him take it. This time, I didn’t pull away.
The three of us stood together, huddled beneath the vast expanse of shimmering lights making silent wishes for the future.
From that moment on, we embraced life fully, leaving the past behind and embracing the future with hope.
