He had to explain for a long time to my attending doctor before he reluctantly believed him.
He led him to me, gave me a sympathetic look and left us alone.
I kept my eyes shut. Although I heard the sound of his footsteps approaching, I ignored him.
After staring at me for what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke, “I’m sorry.”
“I acted rashly earlier. I didn’t expect this to happen. Jenny’s health has always been fragile. I was afraid that if you hit her and something happened to her, I wouldn’t be able to explain it to my colleagues at work.”
“I swear, I really didn’t see you when I rushed over, otherwise I couldn’t have bumped into you, in your belly is my own flesh and blood, I can’t say anything to lay hands on my own child!”
The stitches from the surgery still throbbed with sharp, unrelenting pain, yet the first thing
he said to me after spending so much effort, was to justify his action.
He did not ask if the surgery. He did not ask how I was feeling and he certainly did not ask where the baby was.

I looked at his tense, anxious face and suddenly smiled. My tears slipped down involuntarily and dripped to my collar, chilling the spot over my heart.
“What’s wrong, Amy? My wife? Don’t scare me. Are you feeling unwell? Hold on, I’ll get the doctor right away!”
“Wait!” I stopped him. Theo froze, bewildered.
I continued, “There is no need. Let’s break up, Theo. I’m tired.”
“I won’t blame her and I won’t blame you either, but please, never appear before me again. In this life, or the next, I don’t want to see you,” I said.
Perhaps he didn’t expect such finality in my words.
Our gazes locked. He stood rooted in place, stunned. It took a while before he reacted, jolted back by the sound of his phone ringing.
When he pulled up his phone and glanced at the caller ID, his expression faltered.
I smirked, full of mockery and looked away. Then I said again, “Go ahead. Like I said, sta
out of my life. Whoever you’re with, it has nothing to do with me.”
Five years of love and marriage ended without so much as a proper goodbye. We had rushed into this relationship and now we parted just as clumsily.
In the beginning, I thought he would leave without hesitation after seeing Jenny’s name on this phone but this time, he declined her call.
“I know I made you suffer today, but I promise this is the last time. I’ll clear things up with

you so I couldn’t help myself but want to protect her.”
Hearing this, I laughed in disdain. “Theo, I’m still alive. You don’t need a complete stranger to reminisce about me. Don’t use me as an excuse for your infidelity. It’s disgusting.”
My resolute tone made him panic.
“How can you think that way, Amy? You know me better than anyone! In these five years, when have I ever betrayed you?”
He said, “This happened because you overreacted and were petty. If you had just apologized, it could’ve ended peacefully. You’re the one who escalated things, I didn’t want it to
turn out this way.”
For the first time, I felt utterly exhausted. He blamed everything on me and I didn’t even Tave the energy to argue.
“Think whatever you want,” I told him. “If you believe a mother should stay silent when insulted, or that I would stoop that low by pushing her down, then yes, I did it. Perfect. Use that as a reason to leave and let’s go our separate ways.”
He tried to defend himself further, but his phone rang again.
This time, he didn’t linger. With a look of disappointment directed at me, he turned and left
the room.
The moment he left, I picked up my phone and messaged my parents overseas and told them that I would join them in two weeks.
This time, I wouldn’t be coming back.
My mother knows me too well. The moment she saw my message, she knew something was wrong and called me immediately.
I couldn’t help but sob but didn’t dare to answer because I was afraid that when she heard
my voice, she realized what I had been through.
I waited until her calls stopped, one after another. After she gave up on calling, only then did
I respond, pretending nothing had happened.
“Sorry, I was having French food and didn’t see my phone,” I told her.
“It’s nothing. I just missed you guys. Being with family is what matters most.”
“After all this time, I’ve realized Theo and I just aren’t compatible. Maybe you were
