Chapter 8
Camden crawled up from the ground, blood all over his face, fury taking over as he was about to strike back.
But when he saw clearly who was holding me, his eyes went wide with terror and fear flashed across them. “Damien Cross! It’s you? You married Melody?“]
Damien pulled me protectively into his arms. The cool, pleasant scent of pine filled my nostrils, and my tense nerves finally relaxed.]
Before I could figure out why Camden was so afraid of him, I heard Damien speak coldly, his voice like ice.]
“Camden Thorne, this isn’t Vegas–you can’t run wild here. Get lost!“[]
Without paying attention to Camden’s furious roars, he carried me to the car.]
“You okay, Melody? Did he scare you?”

As soon as we got in the car, Damien pulled me into his arms, gently comforting me.
I looked up at his perfectly sculpted face with its flawless bone structure, my thoughts drifting back to the day he took me away.
I’d thought he was just an ordinary driver, but it turned out he was the eldest grandson of the Cross family, Chicago’s wealthiest clan.
Damien told me that years ago, his father had been doing business in Vegas but died unexpectedly.[]
He suspected his father’s death was connected to the Thorne family. So he disguised himself as a mute and infiltrated the Thornes to investigate.
To gain Mr. Thorne’s trust, he staged an accident to save him, pretended to be disfigured, and successfully stayed by his side.[]
Now that he’d mostly uncovered what happened back then, he could return to Chicago.
But to deal with Grandpa Cross’s pressure to get married, and to protect me from the Thorne family’s harm, Damien married me.
Seeing me staring at him blankly, Damien chuckled softly, leaned over to kiss me, and mumbled against my lips, “You look so cute when you zone out.“]
My ears suddenly turned red with embarrassment.[]
When the kiss ended, my breathing was all over the place, and I finally remembered what I wanted to ask: “That should’ve been Camden’s first time seeing your real face, right? Even though you just met, not only does he know you, but I felt like he was really scared of you. Why?“]]
Hearing Camden’s name, Damien’s eyes narrowed slightly, his expression unreadable.[]
After a long pause, he leaned close to my ear and whispered, “I killed him once.”
“0
I was shocked. Before I could wrap my head around what was happening, I heard Damien say word by word: “Melody, I was reborn too.”
My head buzzed, and I sat there stunned for a while before it sank in.[]
“You were reborn too?!”
Damien buried his head in the crook of my neck, took a deep breath, and started telling me about his past life in a muffled voice.
“Melody, you don’t know—from the moment I chose the path of revenge and stepped into the Thorne house, I wasn’t myself anymore. I was in pain every day during that time. You saved me. When I was at my lowest and most desperate, you gave me a piece of candy. I remembered that sweetness for years, and I fell madly in love with you. But you only had eyes for Camden.“]]
“In my past life, I got evidence of the Thorne family’s crimes, but by then you’d already married Camden. If I continued my revenge and hurt him, you’d be upset, so I gave up revenge and chose to leave.“]
“I thought that would make you happy, but that bastard Camden tortured you instead. By the time I found out and finally tracked you down to that underground casino, you were already a cold corpse.“]]
“So I killed Camden and committed suicide at your grave. Thankfully, heaven took pity on me and gave me a chance to start over. Thank God I wasn’t too late this time.”
By the time Damien finished, I was sobbing uncontrollably.
So there had been someone in this world who loved me so deeply.[]
Damien gently kissed away the tears on my face, saying tenderly, “Don’t cry, baby. I want to make you happy.“]
I hugged him tightly and kissed him first.
Damien chuckled softly in my ear, “So forward–can you be this forward on bed too?“]
I blushed and playfully hit his chest.

A few days later, Damien handed over evidence of the Thorne family’s crimes to the police.
Soon, Mr. Thorne was publicly arrested for investigation. Thorne family stocks plummeted, partners pulled out their investments, and within less than a month, the Thorne family officially declared bankruptcy.[]
The day I returned to Vegas to bring Dad to Chicago was the last time I saw Camden.]
He stood at my family’s door, skinny beyond recognition, his eyes bloodshot. In just a few days, white hair had already started growing on his head.]
Damien stood warily behind me, his gaze vicious.]
I patted his hand reassuringly and stepped forward to have my final confrontation with Camden.
“Melody, you’re here. I… I miss you so much. Every night I dream about our high school days. You were so innocent then, your heart and eyes were full of me. But… but how did I lose you?“]
Camden’s broken sobs escaped from his throat, but they could no longer stir any waves in my heart.]
“I already punished Scarlett, Melody. Can you give me one more chance? Aren’t I the one you love most? We…”
He tried to reach out and touch me, but I dodged him in disgust.]
“Both lives were your own choice. In the past life, you married me but blamed me for making you lose Scarlett, so you punished me. In this life, you got your wish and married Scarlett, then blamed everything on her.“[]
“Camden Thorne, you don’t deserve anyone’s love.“]
My words hit Camden like lightning, and he collapsed to the ground.
Just then, sirens wailed.]
Police officers pulled out handcuffs to arrest Camden: “We found a female corpse in your mansion’s freezer. We suspect you of intentional murder. Please come with us.”
With that, Camden was loaded into the police car, his face ashen.
Before leaving, he looked at me deeply and said painfully, “Melody,
“In the next life, I definitely won’t miss
you. I’ll
I definitely take good
car
of
you.”
Damien pulled me into his arms with displeasure, saying mockingly, “Don’t worry about it. Just enjoy your new life in prison.“]]
Later, Camden was sentenced to fifteen years for intentional murder. But no one expected that on his very first day in prison, the young man would steal a pen and pierce his own artery.
Before dying, he shouted, “If I die, I can start over again! Melody, I won’t miss you again!“]·
When I heard this news, I just laughed it off.]
Because Damien and I had already promised each other that we’d be together for all eternity, forever and always.]
