Chapter 5
Yara stood still as she watched Bryce and Yelena kiss. There were many things she wanted to say, but when she tried to speak, nothing came out.
Yelena’s expression shifted in a panic. She pushed Bryce away and rushed over to Yara.
“Yara, why… Why didn’t you c–call me when you got up? I was just talking to Bryce about what gift would cheer you up after such a b–bad injury,” Yelena stammered. “Then a bug flew into my hair, and he was helping me get it out.”
She rambled on, shooting Bryce desperate looks. She hoped he would agree with her.
His expression grew icy. He pressed his lips together and said nothing.
When he saw Yelena was on the verge of tears, he finally nodded. His voice was clipped and firm when he said, “Yes.”
Yara knew Yelena was only doing this to protect their seven–year friendship.
When she first learned the truth, Yara had hated Yelena for a while. She didn’t know how to face her.
But once she decided to walk away, the love and hatred started to fade. None of it mattered anymore. So although she knew they were putting on a show for her, she didn’t call them out.
She pushed back the wave of emotions welling in her and forced a smile.
“I see.”
Yelena had no idea what Yara was really thinking. She just assumed the latter hadn’t seen everything, and then she grabbed Yara’s arm.
“Yara, what are you doing outside your room? I’ll keep you company, okay?” Yelena said sweetly.
Yara pulled out the form and replied, “The doctor told me to get examined.”
Yelena quickly said she would go with Yara, then walked her out of the stairwell.
The test results came back quickly. The doctor suggested a few more days of IV treatment, so Yara had to stay in the hospital.

Yelena dropped by now and then to check on her. Every time she showed up, Bryce would appear too.
The two of them kept claiming that it was just a coincidence, but Yara knew the one Bryce really came to see was Yelena. After all, whenever he peeled fruit, he would hand the sweetest pieces to Yelena.

While Yara and Yelena chatted, he would silently stare out the window, watching Yelena through the reflection on the glass. Yara saw everything he did.
The meals he brought were always dishes that Yelena liked.
Sometimes it stung, but she never let it show. She knew she was slowly moving on,
One day, she would let go of everything for good.

On the day she was discharged, Bryce came to pick her up himself and suggested they go on a date.
It was the first time he had ever asked her out. She was stunned for a moment, not sure what he was trying to do. First, he took her to a movie, then they went shopping.
He bought her jewelry, handbags, and clothes. He even picked out about a dozen styles he thought looked good. “This one’s too bright. It doesn’t suit you.”

always Yara who suggested it. Bryce just kept her company.
He never gave an opinion whenever she picked something out. He merely paid for everything.
So it felt strange seeing him so engaged and offering his opinions. It was like he wasn’t himself.
The sales assistant rarely saw a man this handsome and patient. She quickly shot a look of envy at Yara.
“Ma’am, not only does your husband shop with you and pick out gifts for you, he really cares about how you feel too. You must be so happy to have someone who spoils you like this.”
As she watched Bryce put out his black credit card to pay without hesitation, Yara stayed silent while her mind raced.
Was she happy?
Ferhaps she would be if she didn’t know he loved Yelena. But after everything that happened, the luxurious and expensive gifts stirred nothing in her.
She knew Bryce was trying to make up for the love he couldn’t give by spending money on her without hesitation.
What he could give her, she didn’t want. And what she truly wanted, he couldn’t give.
Maybe this marriage had been a mistake from the very beginning.
