Chapter 12

“You’re my moon, sweetheart. I’ll give you whatever you want. Please don’t leave me!”
Instead of being moved, I covered my mouth and burst into laughter. Zachary was completely dumbfounded.
I met his distraught gaze and said nonchalantly, “I found someone who truly loves me and whom I love in return, Zachary. That man is my husband, Christopher Peterson. Even if every other man on this planet dropped dead, I would never get back together with you.”
All Zachary could do was watch as I happily let Christopher, ears flushed red, slip a nine–carat diamond onto my finger.
Zachary felt as if the blood in his veins had turned to ice.
I walked past Zachary, hand in hand with Christopher.
I was beaming with happiness as I let Christopher sweep me up into a bridal carry toward our honeymoon ride parked outside the chapel.
As I left him behind, Zachary suddenly did something that horrified everyone. No one could’ve seen it coming.
He grabbed the silver cake knife and screamed at me with tears in his eyes, “You’re afraid of getting hurt again but it’s okay. I’ll give you my heart right now!”
He violently stabbed the long blade into his chest. His frame trembled in agony.
“See, Keira. My heart… It’s mine… My heart has never stopped loving you! Please turn around, Keira. Look at my heart one last time!”
Even as his desperate wails echoed behind me, I never turned around. Instead, I nestled into Christopher’s embrace and smiled sweetly. “Crazy people are scary when they lose it, honey. Hurry, take me away.”
Christopher strode out of the chapel and gently deposited me in the passenger seat of the sports car.
“Let’s get out of here, babe.”
“Okay.”
I smiled and leaned comfortably against Christopher’s shoulder.
With a single press of the gas pedal, he took me speeding toward true happiness.
