Chapter 6
1/1
“Why didn’t Keira come with you?”
Faced with William’s pointed question, Zachary pressed his lips together and defended me for once.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa. Keira has been tied up preparing your gift lately. She’s been working too hard, so I told her to take a break and come by later.”
Two hours quickly passed.
The birthday party had reached its grand finale. It was time for gifts and well–wishes. Yet, I was still nowhere to be found.
Zachary forced down the mounting unease in his gut and excused himself to a corner. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed my number.
“The number you have dialed…”
Undeterred, he tried calling again, but all he got was the same automated busy tone.
That was when a mail carrier walked into the banquet hall to deliver the three gifts I had sent.
Amid the crowd of curious gazes, William smiled as he opened the first gift.
Within it lay a stunning embroidered tapestry of divine figures in celebration of a birthday.
It was clearly the result of the months of effort I had put into embroidering the piece.
William was so moved that he opened my second gift with tears in his eyes.
Tucked inside were the heirloom jewels that Zachary’s grandmother gifted to me when Zachary and I got married.
The entire hall fell silent the moment the jewels were revealed.
In high society, everyone knew what it meant when a woman returned heirloom jewels.
Before William could come to his senses, Zachary, with a dark expression, stepped toward the third gift with his fists clenched.
Just as I had planned, he opened the final gift I had prepared with his own hands and a stony gaze.
The box was huge. Yet, there was barely anything inside.
All that lay in the box was a divorce agreement and a medical report.
Zachary was taken aback.
Was I truly divorcing him?
How was that possible?
After reading the report, William backhanded Zachary across the face for all to witness.
“You bastard, look at the mess you caused! I would’ve never allowed you to marry Keira I had known about this! You ruined her life, Zachary!”
William was on the verge of fainting from anger. The Twains hurried to steady him and escort him out.
After everyone had tactfully left the room, Zachary stayed rooted to the spot, staring at the divorce papers in his hands.
After what felt like an eternity, he tore the divorce papers to shreds, his expression utterly blank.
He ignored Abigail calling out behind him, took the car keys from the driver, and drove himself to the Sullivan residence.
But to his disappointinent, the residence lay shrouded in darkness.
He waited by the gate with his car windows rolled down, smoking through the night until his throat was raw and his voice hoarse. Still, the lights never
came on.
It wasn’t until five days after the birthday party that he discovered that I had left Crupeland.
He wondered why I had left the country. Could it be that I no longer wanted to see him?
All he had done was make the same mistake every man had made.
“Who gave Keira the right to walk out on me? How could she say she’s done and wants a divorce?”
He refused to agree. He was not going to allow it!
After going to great lengths to find out where I lived, Zachary immediately booked the earliest flight. He didn’t make a detour to go home, nor did he pack anything. He simply left the office and headed for the airport,
Just as he was about to check in, Abigail found him with tears in her eyes.
“Zach, do you not want me and the baby anymore?”
He glanced at her growing belly and patted her head. “I’ve had my assistant, Hudson, set up a new place for you. You’ll be moving in today.”
Abigail burst into tears upon hearing what he had to say.
