Chapter 12
Having a mixtress should’ve been a symbol of how irresistible Samuel was to women. But right now, he belatedly realized just how shameful it was, especially when Exasly had left him because of it.
“Su, your wife left because you were cheating on her?” Kate questioned bluntly.
Samael said nothing. He simply nodded with a grimace. Thankfully, a call from an unfamiliar number saved him. Holding out hope that it might be Emily who was finally willing to reach out to him, he took the call.
“As I speaking to Mr. Samuel Porter Marcus introduced himself over the phone, explaining that he was a lawyer. “Ms. Anderson hired my services. There’s something I need to discuss with you in person. Are you free to drop by now?”
“Yes. I’ll be right there” Samuel replied
He couldn’t waste time explaining the situation to the police, so he claimed to have something he needed to attend to before speeding off.
All Samuel could think about was meeting with Marcus as soon as possible before convincing Emily to return to him. Along the way, he ran a ton of red Eights and heard all sorts of people cursing at him, but he couldn’t care about any of that.
When he arrived at the law firm, Marcus slid a divorce agreement over to him. However, he didn’t notice it at all. Instead, he looked around the law firm before asking frantically. “Where’s Emily? Is she still refusing to see me? I’ve got something to say to her. Tell her to come out!”
“My apologies, but that’s not possible. Ms. Anderson isn’t even here today. She has left the law firm in charge of the entire divorce proceedings. If you have any objections, Mr. Porter, please convey them to me,” Marcus said.
He pushed the divorce agreement a little closer to Samuel. Only then did Samuel notice it, and his expression turned stormy. After glancing at it, he immediately tore it into pieces and threw the scraps into the air.
“I will never agree to divorce her!” he snarled through gritted teeth. Eyes red, he adamantly declared, “All I did was make a little mistake, but don’t all men make the same mistake as me? I know I was wrong for what I did. If she’s unhappy, I swear I won’t meet up with anyone who upsets her ever again. That should be enough, right?”
Emily loved him so much. Surely she would be moved by him if he could only meet her face to face.
Smiling faintly, Marcus reminded Samuel, “Mr. Porter, since you acknowledge that you’re at fault for the divorce, you should realize that the divorce agreement isn’t the only option for pursuing a divorce. We could always take this to a judge. Ms. Anderson has said that if you object to the divorce, I am to file for the divorce in court.”
“Is she not even going to talk to me about this herself?” Samuel questioned as he stared at Marcus in disbelief, looking as if he wanted to spot a hint that Marcus was Ning
Still smiling politely, Marcus replied, “Ms. Anderson has said that she doesn’t wish to see you. All she has to say to you has been said in the letter she left You”
Samuel scoffed. “You call that a letter? She left me nothing but a few crude sentences. Either way, I’m not signing that divorce agreement. I’ve already torn it up. I want to see her in person.”
He was in agony, as it something had been ripped out of his chest.
Marcus seemed to have expected this reaction. Once Samuel calmed down somewhat, Marcus opened his folder and pulled out a new copy of the divorce agreement, saying, “Ms. Anderson said you’d rip up the first copy, so I prepared a second one,”
Infuriated, Samuel snatched the second copy and tried to rip it up as well, but Marcus said, “Feel free to rip up as many copies as you want, Mr. Porter. Ms. Anderson has already approved the master copy. You can continue tearing them all up to your heart’s desire. Once you’re done, I’ll make more copies. After all, the cost is included in the fee.”
Samuel deflated. He felt as it all his strength had been sapped out of him. Swiftly adopting a whole new attitude, he pleaded, “I apologize for my poor behavior earlier. Can you please tell me where Emily is right now?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Porter, but I’m unaware of that as well,” Marcus said, his attitude unchanged.
In other words, Emily didn’t want to see Samuel, not even for one last time.
Nevertheless, Samuel’s demeanor became even more courteous. He politely tried to discuss the matter with Marcus. “How’s this? As long as you tell me where Emily is, I’ll give you 10… no, 50 million dollars in exchange.”
“I’m not allowed to divulge information about my client without her permission, Mr. Porter.”
“This is just one case. 50 million is enough for you to open a new law firm. You can even take an early retirement, and you won’t need a partner for your law firm either. This is a very worthwhile deal to make,” Samuel persuaded, hoping he could get Marcus to acquiesce.
Alas, Marcus remained unmoved. “I’d love to become a multimillionaire overnight, Mr. Porter, but I also hope I can earn that money through honest work as a lawyer. In any case, I truly do not know where Ms. Anderson is. After we settled the case, she only ever contacted me through calls.” Clutching onto that final shred of hope, Samuel declared, “If you give me the number she’s currently using, I’ll pay for it!”
“She used her previous number to get in touch with me. It was unreachable when I tried to call her today,” Marcus replied smoothly. An icy tension filled the conference room.
