Chapter 10%
He gave me a promise. But in the end, he still broke his word.
The one who didn’t want to betray chose the most unforgivable betrayal.}
My parents were informants for the police, working for them for many years.
His family knew the Sward Family was innocent and deeply respected them, so they arranged an engagement between his younger brother and me.
It led to a tragic ending for all three.
He wanted to protect Rachel, wanted to protect me, wanted to protect this family.
But in the end, he failed to protect anyone. Everything was destroyed by his own hands.
In the midst of his breakdown, his mother’s scolding rang in his ears. Martin was overwhelmed with frustration and flung the cigarette butt out the door.”
“I told you, Jessie is not that kind of person! She’s innocent! Don’t ever let me hear the word ‘divorce‘ again.“)
His mother stood there in shock, unable to believe that her dutiful son would turn against her for a woman.”
“What do you mean? Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for that bitch Jessie? She’s a lunatic! Being with her will destroy our whole family!” Her words tore apart all his pretenses, forcing him to confront the emotions he had suppressed.
Martin suddenly laughed, his face full of bitterness.
‘Do I love Jessie?‘ He thought.”
He probably did.
Having found his answer, he no longer hesitated and turned to go search for me.
But Rachel’s call came in first.
Martin had just stepped out when he instinctively answered the call.
Rachel’s tearful voice came through immediately. “Martin, help me! Jessie–jie showed up at the hospital. She just tried to strangle me! She’s gone mad, she must be insane! You said you’d protect me. Where are you? Can you come and stay with me, please… I’m begging you…”
Hearing her words, Martin’s first reaction was a flicker of joy.
I hadn’t left. I hadn’t abandoned him.
But that joy was quickly replaced by cold clarity and anger surged through his chest.
“Rachel, Jessie would never go to you! Why are you lying?”
After coming to terms with his feelings, he also came to understand my character.
I held grudges, but never stooped low. I would never secretly make things hard for Rachel. I would only use legal means to clear my family’s name, just like that signed letter of accusation.
Rachel froze for a couple of seconds, not expecting Martin to doubt her. “Martin, what are you saying? I didn’t lie to you… Jessie already pushed me down the stairs and made me lose the baby, how could she not be at the hospital? Why won’t you believe me!”
His patience ran out. For the first time, he spoke to Rachel coldly. “Enough! know Jessie better than you do! You know exactly how you feel. I’ve held back for your dignity, but don’t push your luck!“}
“Rachel, I’ve kept my word. Five years of protecting you is more than enough. Now that someone has reported the murder case and the provincial authorities have sent a special investigator, I can’t help you this time. You’re on your own.“N
“And another thing, your husband is Mark. The person you should be calling is him. Don’t bother me again!”
Before Rachel could respond, he hung up the phone.
If she was truly as innocent as she claimed, this investigation wouldn’t affect her in the slightest and she wouldn’t need any more help from him.
He didn’t have the time, or the heart for it anymore.
Just as he was about to get in the car, his mother, having overheard the phone call, stormed out in a fury.
She raised her hand, ready to slap him across the face. “Are you insane? Turning against Rachel for that bitch? How did I raise a son like you?”
The slap was stopped mid–air, blocked by Martin
