Martin was sitting right by the hospital bed.\
The voice from the phone was loud and clear that Rachel heard every word.” Before he could even react, Rachel had already started playing the victim.
“Is Jessie in trouble? Could it be… because of me? Martin, you should go find her. I’m okay now. You two have already argued so many times because of me. If she’s bringing that case to the station this time, it’s bound to affect you. I’m sorry… this is all my fault. If only I hadn’t gone to the family dinner, maybe she wouldn’t have remembered what happened five years ago…“}
Martin’s face turned deathly pale. Not wanting Rachel to know what was happening at the station, he hurriedly ended the call.
But his first instinct was still to defend me. “No, Jessy’s not such a person. She’s probably just mad at me and waiting for me to coax her. She already promised she wouldn’t pursue that case again. This has nothing to do with her. Don’t overthink it. Just focus on getting better. I’ll have Mom come over to take care of you. I have something to handle at the station, so I need to go.”
Rachel said he should go find me. But just as Martin stood up, she clutched her belly and cried out in pain.
“Ah… it hurts, Martin… Is the wound bleeding again? Can you… maybe not leave just yet? Just stay here with me for a little while?”
She put on that same weak and pitiful expression she always used, playing the part to perfection.
But
this time, Martin didn’t fall for it.
A flicker of hesitation crossed his face, but when he spoke, his voice was firm and unwavering.
“I’ll get the doctor to check on you. Don’t move around. Rachel, I really have something important to deal with. Stop making a fuss.“} Rachel’s outstretched hand froze midair.
The man who left gave her nothing but his retreating back. He didn’t even call the doctor as promised.
Jealousy and hatred churned in her eyes.}
But soon, her expression calmed.
She knew that once I learned the truth, I wouldn’t stay. Even if I were still alive, I would have no face to return to my husband’s family. With this “falling down the stairs” incident, even if I tried to explain myself, she believed no one would take my side.}
In Rachel’s eyes, I had always been the loser from the very start.”
It was the same five years ago. And five years later, nothing had changed.}
To Martin and Mark, the one they held dearest could only be her.”
No one was allowed to compete with her.”
Martin left the hospital and quickly got into his car, heading toward the police bureau.
Or the way, messages in the work group kept coming in like a storm.
[What kind of joke is this? The hostage turns out to be the murderer? That’s insane. Weren’t those two from the Sward Family examined personally by Martin? The conclusion was already determined. It was an accidental fall. And now it’s being called murder? A clean stab to the heart?”
“Are they seriously accusing Martin of falsifying the autopsy report? Has he lost his mind?”
“Then those traitor rumors from back then were fake too? The two from the Sward Family helped us so much with the investigation… Did we seriously misjudge them?“}
Martin glanced at his phone and his thoughts completely unraveled.
He couldn’t understand what had happened in just a single day.
He had locked the case files from that old crime, every last one of them, inside his study, hidden away as if the truth could be silenced forever.
What unsettled him even more was that I still hadn’t replied to any of his messages.
At that moment, his mind turned to me and the child I had been carrying.#
With deep regret, he slammed a fist into the steering wheel.
Damn it.M
How could he have forgotten?
I had been pregnant too and I had also fallen down the stairs. But in the heat of the moment, just because I was accused of pushing Rachel, he had forgotten about his own wife and our child.
11:37 PM ·
A flood of doubts engulfed him.
Martin rushed to the police station in a panic.
