Chapter 21
The issue was resolved quickly this time.
Ryan had continuously harassed Kathleen and even tried to take her away, prompting Shawn to intentionally crash his car into Ryan’s.
Although Shawn’s actions were somewhat extreme, they were understandable under the circumstances.
Nonetheless, the police held them temporarily for a verbal warning and required Ryan to write a formal promise that he would never bother Kathleen again.
However, she knew well that a written promise from someone like Ryan was completely worthless.
To prevent further conflict, the police allowed Kathleen and Shawn to leave first.
Colin had already driven over a new car and was waiting for them outside the police station.
“Are you both okay?” he asked, first looking at Shawn and then at Kathleen.
Kathleen nodded, indicating she was fine.
“I’ll drive you home first. Then, I’ll come back to get the other car.”
“Give me the keys,” Shawn instructed, reaching out his hand.
Colin hesitated. “Your body…”
“I’m fine,” Shawn reassured him.
Only then did Colin hand over the car keys.
Shawn glanced at Kathleen, mentioning, “Let’s go.”
Kathleen quickly followed Shawn and got into the green Cayenne.
In the car, she was still worried. “Are you really okay?”
“I’m fine,” he answered, staring straight ahead. “Do you still need to head into the office?”
“Yes, I need to pick something up.”
Shawn drove to her office building and parked the car. “I’ll wait for you.”
Kathleen nodded and quickly went into the office.

Seeing her return, her coworkers immediately wanted to know how things had turned out.
“I’ll explain later. My husband is waiting,” Kathleen answered, grabbing her things. She turned to the colleague who had called the police for her and added, “Thank you.”
Returning to the car, she saw that Shawn was on a call, looking rather grim.
She hesitated, wondering whether she should wait for him to finish before getting in, but just as she was about to step back, Shawn ended his call.
“Burkle your seatbelt,” he reminded her.
Kurdern nodded and fastened the belt. The car started immediately afterward.
“You’re not thinking about having someone beat him up again, are you?” She wasn’t concerned for Ryan’s sake. She was only worried that he might

Shawn scoffed, “How shallow.”
Yes, she was that shallow. Attractive people had easily won her over.
“You got tricked once and still haven’t learned your lesson,” he remarked pointedly.
Kathleen knew exactly what he meant. She picked nervously at her fingers. “Well, you’re good–looking enough for me to fall for it again.”
Shawn went silent.
She really couldn’t learn from her mistakes.
“Besides…” Kathleen defended herself. “I have to trust myself, don’t I?”
Shawn didn’t feel like continuing the conversation, so she decided not to provoke him further.
The rest of the ride was so quiet that it felt as though they didn’t exist to each other, creating an odd sense of harmony. “Shawn,” she called out suddenly as they began crossing a bridge.
