Chapter 10%
Rebecca naturally had no idea what was going on. She hadn’t been in contact with Karen all day. When she said Karen was fine, it was just to keep Jason from worrying about her. Now, hearing that Karen had died, she was completely shocked.”
But death might be a good thing. It saved her from having to deal with Karen interfering in her relationship with Jason..!
A flash of happiness passed through Rebecca’s eyes, but she quickly masked it with a sad expression, squeezing out a few tears.
“I don’t know what happened either. The servants in the house told me. I didn’t know that my sister… Jason, you must take care of yourself. I’m very sad about my sister’s death too, but there’s nothing we can do. We can only pray that she is living better in the other world.
As she spoke, she tried to lean into Jason’s embrace, but he pushed her away, clearly irritated
Jason’s face turned ashen and he grabbed the doctor’s shoulder, demanding urgently, “Where is Karen now? Tell me, quickly!“)
“She… She is currently in the third–floor operating room undergoing an organ transplant surgery. She signed this agreement before her death, donating all her organs except for her heart,” the doctor answered truthfully.
Upon hearing this, Jason didn’t hesitate for a second. He showed the doctor aside and ran toward the third floor. Witnessing this, Rebecca panicked. She sat down on the floor, crying out in pain, “Jason, my leg hurts so much, Jason…”
But Jason seemed to ignore her entirely. He didn’t even spare her a glance as she continued to wall. Her cries were so exaggerated that it seemed she might faint at any moment. Yet, none of it could stop him.
He reached the third floor at the fastest speed possible and immediately spotted a doctor coming out of the operating room. With one swift step, he blocked the doctor’s path.
“Where is Karen? Where have you taken her?” Jason demanded urgently, his voice trembling with panic.}
The doctor was startled by the sudden appearance of Jason but quickly composed himself before responding, “Patient information is confidential. Who are you to her that I should disclose any information?
“I am her family! Her sister is my wife! Tell me where she is, now!” Jason’s voice cracked as he pressed the doctor.
The doctor furrowed his brows, noticing that Jason’s concem for the deceased seemed sincere. After a brief hesitation, he spoke up. “We have followed the agreement she signed and all her organs except for her heart have been donated. Even her body has been sent out as a specimen for study, all of it done in complete confidentiality. You won’t be able to find her. However, she does still have one heart left with us.”2
As soon as the doctor finished speaking, a nurse emerged from the operating room, pushing a cart. On the cart was a transparent box and inside it lay a weathered artificial heart!
Jason stood frozen, struck by a thunderbolt, as he stared at the heart in front of him. His

explanation continued in his ears. “This is an artificial heart with a theoretical lifespan of only seven years. Today just happens to be the day it stopped working. The exact moment it ceased beating was just before the deceased fell into the river”
In that instant, Jason’s mind flashed back to earlier that day, when he had abandoned Karen on the suspension bridge in order to save Rebecca. At that moment, Karen had looked pale, barely able to stand and he had thought she was just putting on a show again. He never realized that it was the precursor to her artificial heart failing. He had believed it to be another one of her tricks and had left her behind.8
A wave of regret and self–blame crashed over Jason, Trembling, he slowly approached the heart. When he saw the numerous cracks on it, he completely broke down. He clutched the heart to his chest and sobbed uncontrollably.
