Chapter 11%
When Rebecca found Jason, he was sitting on the floor like an abandoned child, crying uncontrollably. His body trembled with grief and in his arms, he was holding an artificial heart encased in a transparent box.!
Rebecca immediately recognized the heart as Karen’s. A flash of resentment crossed her eyes, but she feigned sympathy and spoke in a falsely consoling tone.
“Jason, I never expected my sister’s death either. I’m as sad as you are, but once someone is gone, they can’t come back. Please, grieve and let it go.“}
At the sound of her voice, Jason’s trembling body stilled. Slowly, he lifted his head and fixed his gaze on Rebecca, his eyes burning with intensity.
“What happened to Karen over the years? Why did her perfectly healthy heart turn into an artificial one? Speak up! Tell me, why did she need to rely on this artificial heart?“!!
It was the first time Rebecca had seen Jason like this and she was taken aback. For a moment, she didn’t know how to defend herself.
Just then, Jason’s phone rang. It was a call from one of his subordinates.
“Mr. Greene, we’ve found out what you asked us to investigate. The person who donated the heart to you back then was Miss Karen. For some unknown reason, she disappeared after the donation and specifically chose to remain anonymous, which made the hospital unwilling to disclose her information. I used other methods to find her records,” came the voice from the phone.
As the words were spoken, a photo popped up on Jason’s phone. The photo was of a heart transplant agreement and beside his name was the name Karen.
Jason’s face turned pale instantly. He stared at the photo, his mouth opening, but no words came out.
The heart he had used all this time was actually Karen’s? Why had she never mentioned it to him? Why
hy had she allowed him to force her to drink those drinks??
He knew very well that an artificial heart couldn’t handle alcohol. It would cause pain with even the slightest drink. Yet, that day, he had forced her to drink strong liquor. He couldn’t even imagine how much pain she must have been in at that time.
Jason felt like a monster. He had used her heart, yet he had treated her like that
Before Jason could continue to wallow in self–blame, the voice on the other end of the phone spoke again, “Also, we found out why Karen left you. Her adoptive father told her that as long as she gave Rebecca continuous blood transfusions, he would help cure your mother’s illness. He feared that you and your mother would try to stop her once you found out, so he made her sever ties with you and your family”
“Rebecca’s condition is very strange. She needed continuous blood transfusions from Karen, which made her health deteriorate. After Karen donated her heart to you and had the artificial one implanted, she couldn’t undergo another surgery. In other words, from the moment she got the artificial heart, she knew she could only live for seven more years.“}
“Additionally, we found that Rebecca’s condition had actually healed a year ago. Karen no longer needed to give her blood. If Rebecca had taken proper care of her body this past year, Karen could have had a chance to receive a new heart. However, Rebecca deliberately hid her recovery to avoid disrupting the marriage arrangement between you and her, continuing to make Karen give her blood. The last transfusion almost drained all of Karen’s blood…
Jason was shocked. His thoughts were all jumbled and his mind was in complete chaos. His hand shook as he held the phone. The truth hit him hard and he felt overwhelmed by the weight of it all. Everything about Karen’s pain and her sacrifices that he didn’t know suddenly felt too much to bear?
The person on the other end of the phone continued speaking, but Jason could no longer hear them. All he could think about was how Rebecca had pretended to be cured, forcing Karen to keep donating blood to her. He turned his head and looked at Rebecca with a dark expression.E
“What did Karen do wrong? Why did you treat her like this?”
