Realizing their eyes were turning cold, Sophie quickly changed gears.

The men nodded politely and said nothing more.
They escorted her back to the tent in silence.

A younger soldier couldn’t help himself.
“Do you think the colonel and his wife are breaking up because of Dr. Sophie…?”

“But what about Sophie?” the younger one pressed.
“Ever since she showed up, things haven’t been the same. You know it.”

“It’s okay. You should go after your wife.”
“This is my fault. I shouldn’t be here anymore.”
“Just… let me see you one last time before I go.”
A flicker of guilt crossed Zachary’s face.
“Don’t talk like that.”
“She’s just being dramatic.”
“You need to rest–no more nonsense about leaving.”

The soldiers standing neartry shifted uncomfortably,
They hadn’t expected Sophie to hear what they’d said.
Everyone knew the colonel showed her special favor-
So there was always a line they hesitated to cross.
Zachary swept a sharp look across the group.
“I’m not gonna be around for a bit.”
“I expect you all to take care of Dr. Sophie.”
After a moment’s silence, the soldiers saluted in unison.
Sophie’s eyes sparkled faintly.

She stepped aside.
Zachary gave a firm nod, swung into the saddle, and took off.
