Chapter 6
“Look, you just want to borrow money. I can lend it to you—I’m compassionate like that.”
“But I have one condition. For every thousand dollars you borrow from me, either you or Xavier has to thank me once.”
“And make it sincere. If I’m pleased enough, maybe I won’t even make you pay it back.”
My tablemate was one of Christmas’s good friends who had been at that party too.
He’d been indignant on my behalf ever since, and today he finally got his chance. There was no way he’d let these two off
easy.
Zoe really did have strong psychological resilience. Even after being humiliated like this, she didn’t feel embarrassed. Instead, she said righteously, “You rich kids don’t lack money. What’s the big deal about using ten thousand dollars to pay Xavier’s tuition?”
“Besides, you used to be friends. Won’t you even help with something this small?”
“Those accessories Vivian’s wearing must be worth a lot, right? Give them to me first. I’ll exchange them for cash and return whatever’s left over.”
I let out a cold laugh, looking at Zoe like she was an idiot.
“Don’t try to blackmail me with your dirty schemes. I’ve seen plenty of tactics like that.”
“Since you promised to be independent back then, don’t go back on your word so easily.”
My words were merciless, and even someone as shameless as Zoe couldn’t help but tear up.
“Enough, Vivian! I knew I was right about you–you’re exactly the kind of rich, arrogant, and vicious woman I thought you
were!”
Xavier slammed the table and shot to his feet, glaring at us furiously.
He grabbed Zoe’s hand, his eyes so sincere it looked like he was proposing.
“I won’t let you suffer this kind of humiliation for my sake. It breaks my heart.”
“You don’t need to beg people like them. They’re not worth it!”
“We can work and earn money, slowly save up funds. Then start a business and build a home that belongs to us.”
Zoe nodded vigorously, gripping Xavier’s hand tightly.
“You’re right. We don’t need to be humiliated by these rich people. We can create a better life too.”
“True love conquers all!”
This couple, about to drop out of school, stood by my table encouraging each other. I waved them off, finding them nothing but a disturbance.
How had I never noticed how stupid Xavier was before?
His naive and foolish appearance only made me find him laughable.
Xavier was true to his word. The next day, he completed his withdrawal procedures and began focusing on job hunting.
When Xavier was young, his parents had planned for him to take over the family business, so he wasn’t unfamiliar with business operations.
Xavier was extremely arrogant and completely looked down on ordinary companies. When submitting resumes, he only chose well–known enterprises and set his salary requirements directly at over a million dollars.
Before, he had been a rich young master who was respected
wherever he went.
Now he hadn’t even graduated high school, and none of the companies took his submitted resumes seriously.
Xavier waited at home for several days but never received a satisfactory offer.
But he thought highly of himself, convinced he was a rare genius who simply hadn’t been discovered yet.
So he took the initiative to visit several well–known companies to recommend himself.
Xavier claimed he had complete knowledge of the national stock market and could handle trading operations, creating massive profits for the company in the short term.
He also said he was skilled in investment and knew how to
secure major projects.
However, before he could finish speaking, security escorted him
out.
He was indignant, feeling those companies were short–sighted and wouldn’t even give him a chance to try.
Xavier wasn’t willing to give up. He simply waited downstairs at the company for three days, finally figuring out the CEO’s schedule. But before he could find an opportunity to strike up a conversation, he was taken away by police.
The reason was that Xavier was suspected of stalking.
