Chapter 7
The first day after the news broke, I walked into class and immediately noticed everyone staring at me like I was some spectacle
Rachel quickly sent me a message on WhatsApp:
[Megan, check our class group chat!]
I opened it, and I almost laughed out loud from both anger and disbelief.
Sophie had posted pictures of the luxury suite from my family’s hotel, clearly showing off. She also threw in a picture of me wearing a cleaning uniform as if trying to paint me as a fraud.§
The group chat exploded.”
[I always thought Megan squandered money, but it turns out it was all a façade.]
[Is this necessary? Just to act rich and put on a show?]
[Sophie’s the real deal! She’s the real rich girl, beautiful and cute.]
The comments flooded in, and Sophie didn’t bother responding directly.”
She just vaguely typed:
[Girls can be a little vain. It’s normal. Let’s not dwell on it.]
Then, one classmate raised a question:
[But isn’t this hotel owned by Megan’s family? I’ve seen a video of her promoting the hotel online!]}
Sophie quickly responded, sending a long message:
[What kind of hotel owner’s daughter works as a cleaner? She’s just a summer intern helping with videos. Don’t be fooled! If it really was her family’s hotel, why has she never invited us?]}
Sophie’s words were total nonsense, yet some sycophants immediately jumped on board.”
[Yeah, if she’s really a rich girl, why would she be working as a cleaner?]}
[Sophie’s right, Megan’s just pretending to be rich.]
At that, I slammed my phone down on the desk.
“Sophie, have I been too kind to you?” I asked too loudly.”
The room went silent instantly, and everyone turned to look at me.}
Playing the hero, Zeke, our classmate, stood up. “Megan, you can act like you’re some rich kid all you want, but we’ll just look the other way. But now that your real side’s coming out, you’re getting pissed and threatening Sophie?“}]
I smirked. “I thought I heard a dog barking, but it turns out it’s just you, a suck–up.”
Zeke, the kind of guy who’d been kissing up to Sophie for over a year and still had nothing to show for it, went red in the face. His neck bulged, and without thinking, he charged at me.{}
Sophie, still smirking, pretended to stop him. “Oh, come on! Forget it. We’re roommates. Don’t waste your time on her.”
“Oh, you’re not going to bother? Well, I still want to.”
I quickly approached Sophie, reached out, and lifted her shirt and skirt “Since Miss Sophie is so rich, how about you return the clothes I lent you?”
Sophie was obsessed with fashion but was always short on cash. Every time she saw me buy something new, she shamelessly asked to borrow it.
She didn’t really borrow them. Sophie took them.}]
Once those clothes were in her hands, they never came back.
At first, I didn’t make a big deal of it.
After all, I had plenty of clothes.}
But over time, Sophie got used to it.”
At first, she’d say a few polite words, but eventually, she’d take whatever she wanted, always claiming we were best friends and that what
was mine was hers.
Sophie froze for a moment, then quickly regained her composure, lifting her chin in disdain. “I have too many clothes. The dorm’s too small, and if you leave stuff lying around, I’ll just grab it by mistake. Besides, how much are these street–market clothes worth? I’ll transfer you $200. Just stop bothering me.“>
I didn’t say a word.
Instead, I started rummaging through my things like I was searching for something.
Continuing her charade, Sophie said, “Megan, I really regret being friends with you. You’re selfish and stingy. You don’t deserve my friendship at all.”
Her words stung, but I didn’t let it show.
Honestly?!
I was done with her.
