Chapter 15
“Whatever.” Theodore didn’t care at all after hearing Alex’s words.
However, Theodore’s nonchalance had only confirmed Alex’s doubts, which left Alex with panic.
So, Gabriella had never loved him.
He stared at the black–and–white agreement as the idea struck him. It made him feel deflated. His eyes took on a blank look.
“So, are you happy with the truth?” Theodore lounged on his chair and took a sip of his tea.
Alex’s expression was clouded by the steam from the tea. He sat in the same place, unmoving, like an inanimate object.
Still, Alex was the grandson Theodore had high hopes for. He didn’t tell Alex the truth just for Alex to repeat his mistake from six years ago–pining after a woman.
All Theodore wanted was to make Alex understand that love was not a priority. One didn’t have to take it too seriously.
When he spoke again, his tone took on a concerned turn, One could tell he cared for Alex.
“Alex, I’m not trying to beat you up, but you gotta know you’ve been rather impudent in the past. We all need to cherish what we have, be it a person or something else. No one’s gonna wait for
you forever.
“I hid the truth from you because I feared you might not handle it well. When I threatened to give up sponsoring Melody if she insisted on staying by your side, she panicked, took the money, and left to go abroad. If only she had stood by you…
“Well, if Melody hadn’t left, I could have kept out of your business and made up an excuse so she could marry you. As for you… You’re a poor judge of character. How could you give up on taking over Palmer Group over a woman like Melody?
“Speaking of Gabby… Alex, had you treated her right, I don’t believe she’d be so heartless to give up on six years of marriage and her son.
“You’ve failed her If I were you, I wouldn’t be sulking and self–pitying. I’d be looking for her to offer an explanation and try to save the relationship!”
Lucas, who hid by the door, had overheard the entirety of Theodore and Alex’s conversation. The long chat was too much to handle for a child like him. He tried his best, but what stuck to him was the remark. “You’ve failed her.” That was the reason Gabriella had heartlessly abandoned her son.
So, Alex had failed Gabriella. Alex’s claims that Gabriella stood in his and Melody’s way were wrong.
Lucas realized that he had unfairly put the blame on Gabriella. He had hurt his mother–the woman who loved him the most–for someone else!
Tears welled up in his eyes, and he hurriedly ran off. In the midst of his panic, he forgot he was eavesdropping, and he accidentally touched the door handle when he turned around. Following a click, the door swung ajar.
Theodore looked over and saw a tiny figure dashing away from the door. Something occurred to him, and he sighed. “Lucas took after you. He had no manners and knew no rules. He was harsh to his mother, and now, he’s learned how to eavesdrop/
“Leave him with me. I’ll need to personally raise and coach him.”
Theodore made the decision all by himself. This time, Alex did not protest.
After Theodore asked a household staff member to go after Lucas, Alex suddenly rose from his seat and left the room.
