“I can’t live without you…
“I’ll agree to anything you want, just please say something to me, okay?”
Waking up to Ethan’s calls, I was dazed for a long time before realizing this wasn’t a dream.

He really came.
But he hated me so much, he should detest this place. Why did he come looking for me? Why was he pretending to care about me?
Was he trying to coax me into getting treatment, so he could continue to torment me?
I shuddered deeply, struggling out of his arms.
“I’m sorry, you bought this house, I have no right to stay here. I’ll leave right away.”
As soon as I stood up, Ethan held me tightly.
“Don’t be like this, Rachel. You’re my wife, I’ll give you anything you want-”
His panicked and urgent breathing entangled my earlobe: “I was wrong before. Please don’t be angry anymore. Will you come to the hospital
with me?”
“No.”
I tried to push him away, but he held me tighter.
I had to bite his shoulder, but even when I tasted blood, he wouldn’t let go.
“Please let me go. Ethan Evans, I finally paid back what I owed you. Can you please stop pestering me? Do you have to make me die in debt before you’re satisfied?”
My hysterical shouts made Ethan freeze.
He let go of me, gritting his teeth slightly, seemingly trying hard to control his emotions: “When did I ever ask you to repay me or force you to pay back money? Rachel, I know I treated you badly in the past, deliberately taking revenge on you, but you have no right to blame me!”
“You left me first! I bought this house for you with everything I had, and what did you do? You saw that I had spent all my money and left me without hesitation for someone richer. I searched for you like a madman for a year, only to see, to see…”
He started crying, gradually becoming incoherent.
“Rachel, we’ve both hurt each other. Let’s forget about the past.”
“I’ve arranged the best doctors for you. Will you come to the hospital with me…”
I listened quietly.

At that moment, I desperately wanted to hear him say he still loved me.
Not because of pity or reluctance to let go.
Just the inertia of years of deep love from the past.
And even this little bit of sudden inertia was shattered by Ethan’s next words.
“Rachel, I’m not like you. I’m not so cold–hearted that I can say I don’t care and really not care
“Even if I hate you, how could I watch you die without doing anything?”
So it wasn’t because of lingering love.
But in the face of life and death, he temporarily chose to compromise.
