Evan turned to her, his patience snapping.
“Anne, what happens between Claire and me is none of your business. You’re just an outsider.”
Anne froze, her face pale. She tried to feign fainting, but the sight of the phone in Evan’s hand startled her back to reality.
On the screen were medical records Evan had painstakingly obtained through a trusted friend. The foreign doctor Anne had claimed diagnosed her rare illness had outright denied issuing the report, calling it fabricated. The supposed “terminal disease” was a complete
lie.
Evan’s voice was cold and sharp. “Do you have anything to say for yourself? I pitied you, thinking your days were numbered, and yet you lied to me! You’ve been standing between Claire and me, ruining our relationship all this time?”

Anne’s lips trembled as she stammered, completely at a loss.
“Evan, I did all this because I love
you!”
“Shut up! Love me? No–you love my money!”
Evan had already seen her private messages, where she mocked him as a gullible fool, bragging about how easily she could reel him back in with just a snap of her fingers.
If he wasn’t wealthy, she would never lower herself to pursue him. After all, in her eyes, Evan only turned to me because he couldn’t win her over back then.
Desperate, Anne threw herself into Evan’s arms, trying to prove her devotion.
But Evan slapped her across the face.
Anne, unaccustomed to such humiliation, instinctively struck back, which only darkened Evan’s expression further. The two of them devolved into a chaotic mess, hurling insults and blows at each other.
I quietly locked my apartment door, unwilling to waste another moment on their pathetic squabble.
