“Your ex–husband, Evan? He’s really hit rock bottom now,” she said with a sly grin.
Intrigued, I listened as she shared the details.
Apparently, after realizing he couldn’t win me back, Evan returned to the country. He ended up living with Anne, who persisted in clinging to him. Anne, eager to secure her position, tried to use a pregnancy to tie him down.
But one drunken night, Evan, overwhelmed by guilt and memories of the child I aborted, lashed out and caused her to miscarry.
In a fit of rage, Anne grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him below the belt.
“Let’s just say they’ll be stuck calling each other ‘roommates‘ from now on,” my colleague laughed. “I heard the story from someone in editorial–it’s insane!”
I chuckled lightly but didn’t dwell on it.
Knowing Evan’s parents and their vengeful tendencies, Anne was bound to meet a miserable end without any effort from me. Her life would spiral into tragedy on its own.
As the plane prepared for takeoff, I stood in line at the gate and glanced back instinctively.
Through the crowd, I locked eyes with Evan.
He must have only just heard the news and rushed to the airport. His clothes were disheveled, and his once sharp, confident demeanor had completely faded.
He looked older by at least a decade, with a few gray hairs stark against his worn
appearance.
His company, dragged down by its scandal–ridden CEO, had crumbled, its former glory long gone.

Even across the bustling crowd, I could see his lips moving, as though trying to say something.
But I had already turned away, stepping onto the plane without hesitation, leaving it all behind for good.
