Chapter 23 The Stark Contrast In Love
Yet now, the people of the Langford family had shown such a lack of loyalty and affection, their attitude doing a one–eighty
tur
It wasn’t just Emery who found it hard to accept. Even he, as an observer, found it difficult to come to terms with.
The actions of the Langford family y were truly outrageous.
The stark contrast between their love for Emery in the past and the lack of it now was chilling
Seamus stayed with Emery until nightfall. He sat quietly by her bed, watching the medicine drip into her body. It was as if this act was his way of protecting Emery-
He accompanied her while she gave her statement, attentively listening to each question, fearing that Emery might experience the slightest injustice.
It was only when the caregiver he had arranged for arrived and he had meticulously given then instructions that he finally felt at ease enough to leave the hospital. As he walked away, he kept looking back every few steps, his eyes filled with concern.
No one from the Langford family came again…
Just after seven, the distinct sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the silent hallway, abruptly breaking the calm at the entrance of the hospital room.
Emery was like a startled fawn, her eyes flying wide open in surprise.
She watched the door warily, her hands subconsciously tightening around the blanket, ready to defend herself at any
moment
This was a habit she had developed in prison. She dared not fall into a deep sleep, and any slight noise could jolt her awake instantly. It was as if danger could be lurking around her at any moment.
The door was gently pushed open, and a handsome man dressed in a black suit walked in.
His posture was as straight and tall as a pine tree, his face adorned with a pair of gold–rimmed glasses. The eyes behind the lenses were deep and spirited, as if they could see through everything.
He was also
carrying an exquisite box in his hand that gave o
off a faint aroma of food.
“Mr. Joshua, how come you’re here?”
Emery was taken aback, a flicker of surprise lighting up her eyes, Yet, it was quickly replaced by a hint of shyness.
“Can’t I come to see my girlfriend?
The comers of Joshua’s mouth lifted slightly, revealing a captivating smile. It was as if his smile sad the power to dispel the gon in the hospital room
A Buchstardly rose to Emery’s checks, reminiscent of a ripe apple Upon remembering the incident of sleeping with him

She quickly changed the subject, asking “Mr. Joshua, how did you know I was injured?”

hands nervously clutched a corner of the blanket,
“Just have a few bites. I’ll feed you!”
As Joshua spoke, he had already brought a spoonful of stew to Emery’s lips. his gaze both gentle and resolute.
Finished
Emery had no choice but to bite the bullet and eat. She took each bite with utmost caution, spending a full twenty minutes to finish a single bowl of stew.
She felt as if every second had stretched into a year, the blush on her face never fading
Tell me, what on earth happened? How did you get injured?”
Suddenly, Joshua’s countenance darkened, his gaze exuding an intimidating aura that sent chills down one’s spine. His voice, too, had turned icy and deep.
“It was Zachary Luther! He was manipulated by Niamh Turner and Mila Manning. First, they used a housekeeper to drug me. then they sent Zachary. I suppose they intended to humiliate me!” Emery said calmly. Then, she added with a hint of pride in her voice. “But the moment Zachary stepped through the door. I had him under my control!”
Joshua raised an eyebrow, his eyes filled with confusion and surprise. “You had him under your control? But you sustained
several injuries!”
“Well I inflicted those wounds on myself” Emery confessed with a grin, her smile tinged with a blend of defiance and helplessness.
Joshua’s face darkened, as if a storm was about to hit “Emery, have you lost your mind? You stabbed yourself?”
“Mr. Joshua, I was under the influence of an aphrodisiac then, so my mind was all hazy. If I hadn’t hurt myself, it would have been hard to regain clarity. Besides, it wouldn’t have taken them long to catch me in a compromising situation! This was the only way I could protect my innocence!”
Emery’s expression was one of deep distress, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, as if she had been transported back to that dreadful night.
Joshua’s heart instantly softened, his eyes filled with heartache for her. “Why didn’t you call me? Or shout for the Langford family downstairs to come and rescue you?”
Emery let out a bitter laugh, a laugh filled with desolation. “Do you really think the Langford family would come to my rescue, Mr. Joshua! Just look at this empty hospital room, and you’ll have your answer! I even called the police, only to be wolded by them
“Even so, you shouldn’t have resorted to such a reckless method! It was utterly foolish!”
Although Joshua verbally reprimanded her, the concern in his eyes only deepened.
“Mr. Joshua 1 1 had no other choice!”
