Chapter 6 She Was Not Worth Much

Nightfall enveloped the entire city like a massive sheet of black silk. After finishing their meal, Annie and Emery stepped out of the restaurant. By then, the sky outside had already turned completely dark. The dim light from the street lamps spilled onto the road, casting long shadows of the two individuals. Annie skillfully drove the car over, rolled down the window, and called out, “Emery, get in!” Emery quickly walked over and slid into the car after opening the door. The car, like an arrow released from its bow, sped straight toward Night Temptation. Night Temptation’s neon sign was particularly striking in the darkness. The two strolled into the bustling nightclub, not pausing for a moment as they headed straight toward Room 3, the location agreed upon with the enigmatic individual. Upon pushing open the door to the private room, sure enough, there was a man seated inside. He wore a black baseball cap, the brim pulled low over his eyes, and his face was concealed behind a black mask. His figure was rather slender, shrouded in an air of mystery that made it impossible to discern his features. Unhurriedly, Emery found a spot and sat down, her gaze intently fixed on the man. In a somewhat anxious tone, she asked, “Was it you who asked me to come here? What information do you have?” The man didn’t speak; he simply took out his phone in silence. His slender fingers gently tapped the screen. In an instant, a voice all too familiar echoed from the phone, each word piercing Emery’s heart like a sharp blade. “I want you to contact your people in prison. I want Emery to suffer endlessly there, and even better if she dies inside…” “Of course, no problem. But how much are you willing to pay, Ms. Langford?” another voice asked. “Two million, and make sure the job is done cleanly…” The familiar voice echoed again, filled with a ruthless tone. “Ms. Langford, isn’t Emery your older sister? Why would you do this?” “My older sister? She’s not worthy! I’ll strip her of everything she has. If she dies, I’ll give you an extra two million. Feel free to do whatever you want to her!” The man hit the pause button, lifting his gaze to meet Emery’s. He then said in a cold tone, “Ms. Emery, are you interested in this? Two million, and the recording is yours!” A look of disbelief washed over Emery’s face, her eyes gradually shifting from shock to anger. “Winona! I’ve always treated her like a real sister, and yet she dared to harm me like this. It’s just too much!” She took a deep breath, turning her gaze toward the man, her eyes filled with a hint of desperation. “Sir, I know you’re a good person, but I currently have no standing in the Langford family. I really don’t have two million. Could one hundred thousand be enough? That’s all I have!” Upon hearing this, the man instantly grew anxious. His brows furrowed deeply as he raised his voice to retort, “You’re telling me that a Langford family heiress can’t even fork out two million? Who would believe that?” Tears welled up in Emery’s eyes as she clutched the hand of the man in black. Her voice, laced with a sobbing tone, pleaded, “Can you help me, please? Even if it’s one hundred thousand, I’ll have to borrow it from a friend!” The man in black, however, wore a look of disgust on his face. He forcefully shook off her hand. “Who would have thought that the eldest daughter of the Langford family would be nothing more than a pauper! Get lost!” Having said that, he briskly walked out of the private room without looking back. His figure quickly vanished at the dimly lit end of the corridor. Beside Emery, Annie was equally anxious as she quickly said, “Emery, I can lend you the money! Hurry, call him back!” Emery, however, had a sly smirk tugging at her lips. “No need. I purposely annoyed him into leaving!” As she spoke, she calmly picked up her phone. With a light tap on the screen, the recording the man had played earlier began to emanate from her phone. “Wow! Emery, you’re such a sly fox! You actually recorded it!” Annie leapt up in excitement, her eyes brimming with admiration for Emery. Emery’s gaze sharpened, as piercing as a cold star twinkling in the night sky. “It’s not worth spending even a penny on that kind of person!” “Right, she’s not worth it! Waiter, bring the wine!” Annie shouted loudly. In no time, the waiter came in, carrying two beautifully packaged bottles of red wine. “Emery, in celebration of your return, I’m treating you tonight. Let’s not stop till we’re dead drunk!” Annie picked up the wine glasses, skillfully filling them to the brim. Her eyes sparkled with sincerity as she said, “Emery, congratulations on your rebirth. May the rest of your life be smooth sailing!” Having said that, she tilted her head back and finished her glass in one gulp. However, the fiery punch of the liquor made her break into a fit of coughing. Emery looked at Annie, giving a resigned smile. She tipped her head back and downed her own glass of wine, then gently patted Annie’s back. “If you can’t hold your liquor, don’t try to show off.” With great effort, Annie managed to suppress her discomfort. A faint flush spread across her face, yet her gaze held an unwavering determination. “Emery, over the past two years, I’ve built up my tolerance for alcohol!” As she spoke, she picked up the wine bottle and poured another glass. “Emery, may you find a good man in your future!” After she finished speaking, she downed her drink in one go. The boldness of this action was a stark contrast to her usually quiet and reserved demeanor. It was as if she was a completely different person. Emery gazed at Annie, her eyes brimming with emotion. “Annie, I’m so grateful for you. This time, I’m determined to make Winona pay for her actions. I can’t let her off the hook that easily.” Annie gently patted Emery’s shoulder. “Of course, we can’t let her get away with it. But what’s your plan?” A glint of cold determination flashed in Emery’s eyes. “This recording is the best evidence. Sooner or later, I’ll expose it to the world, revealing Winona’s true colors. However, I must wait for the right moment.” Before long, the two of them had finished off both bottles of red wine. Annie had a poor tolerance for alcohol and was already considerably drunk. Emery was also slightly tipsy. After that, Annie selected a few songs, and they both sang their hearts out for a while. Eventually, Emery called for a designated driver for her. In less than half an hour, the designated driver arrived and assisted Annie in leaving. After a trip to the restroom, Emery encountered a few men on her way back. “Oh my! Isn’t this Ms. Emery Langford? How did you get out of jail? You used to boast about being the most beautiful woman in Qutbridge, but look at you now! You’re a shadow of your former self! Hahaha…” When Emery looked up, she saw that it was none other than Hank Sadler, the second son of the Sadler family. The few people trailing behind him were scions from various distinguished families in Qutbridge. Hank had always been smitten with Winona. Consequently, he constantly picked on Emery. Without a doubt, he was utterly devoted to Winona. “Move!” Emery coldly demanded. “Even a dog knows to get out of the way!” “You b*tch, who do you think you’re calling a dog! Are you asking for trouble?” Hank was somewhat infuriated and embarrassed. Someone approached Emery from behind. “Ms. Emery, since you’ve offended Hank, don’t even think about getting away unscathed today. How about you spend the night with me? I can plead for mercy on your behalf! Hahaha…” As he spoke, the man stepped forward, reaching out to touch Emery. Emery tilted her head slightly, revealing a wicked smile. She suddenly lifted her leg, delivering a powerful kick to the man’s stomach. The man was instantly sent flying. “Ah!” He crashed to the ground and began yelling in pain. Emery swayed slightly. Having had a bit too much to drink, her legs were feeling a bit wobbly. “Hey! You b*tch, you’re pretty tough, huh? Guys, get her!” shouted Hank.
