Chapter 14

After dealing with Luna, Jean rushed home, thinking he could finally get some peace. But the second he stepped inside, his eyes went straight to the shelf and his heart dropped

The jar that held Samira was gone

His pulse spiked. He turned the whole place upside down, checking every room, every drawer, every cabinet. It was like he was losing his mind. Then he pulled up the surveillance footage and there it was. His mother had taken it

He immediately called her, barely holding it together. Where is she?he barked the second she answered. Where did you take Samira? Give her back

There was some rustling on her end, wind maybe and her voice came through calm, but heavy with emotion. I buried her, Jean. She deserved peace. You should come say goodbye,”

She hung up before he could say another word, Jean didn’t even stop to think, he jumped in his car and drove like hell to the cemetery

When he got there, Miranda was already standing by a brand new grave, her eyes red but calm. A fresh tombstone stood there, marking where Samim now rested

Jean walked over, slowly, like his legs could barely carry him. His whole body fell numb. He stopped beside his mother, voice low and cracking. Why would you bury her without telling me? His eyes locked on the grave. She must be so cold down thereall alone.% Miranda didn’t look at him. She gently touched his arm and said, quietly, She’s gone, sweetheart. You keeping her ashes at home, clinging to her like thatthat’s not what she would’ve wanted. She’s at peace now. Stay with her properly, okay?”

And with that, she turned and left him there, just him and Samica

Jean sank to his knees in front of the tombstone. He reached out and hugged it, like maybe if he held it tight enough, she would come back. He rested his cheek against the cold marble.X

A bitter laugh escaped him. Mom says you wouldn’t want to see me like this but you would, wouldn’t you?His voice trembled. After what I did to you, I bet you’d want me to be miserable”

He let out a shaky breath, eyes wet. Well, Tom. You got your wish. I’m broken. Come visit me sometime, yeah? Come see what you’ve turned me into. Maybe then you’ll smile again, wherever you are.

His tears hit the ground, silent at first, then the goba came. Raw, heartwrenching, as if they were being torn straight from his chest! The sky overhead started to darken, but he didn’t move.

His voice cracked again, barely above a whisper. Samina why did it have to end like this? Why did you have to leave me?

He paused, then looked up at the sky like he was speaking to the heavens. If I could go back, I’d give anything Anything, just to fix this. Just to hold you one more time.

There was no answer, only the wind and the silence of the graveyard. And eventually, even his sobs faded, leaving behind nothing but the stillness of night

The next day, one of the cemetery workers found Jean passed out cold, still clutching Samira’s tombstone like he couldn’t bear to let go. Even unconscious, his fingers were wrapped around it tight. It took a team of medics a long time to pry his hands free. Miranda rushed over the second she heard and stayed by his side the whole time

Three days later, Jean finally opened his eyes. The first thing he said, hoarse and panicked, was, Where’s Samira?!Miranda figured he was still a little out of it. Jean, honey, she said softly. Samira’s gone. She passed away

That hit him like a punch to the gut. His ears rang, his chest tightened and he dropped his head into his hands

Nonot again,” he whispered. Why is it always too late? Why am I always too damn late?

This was the third time. The third time he had been thrown back into life, given another shot. After Samira’s death in the first timeline, he had made a promise at her grave, if he ever had another chance, he would do things right

Somehow, that chance came. Twice. But both times, he showed up too late. Now, it was happening all over again. And it was breaking

him

Miranda touched his arm, worry written all over her face. Jean? You okay? Are you in pain? I’ll call the doctor.”

Her footsteps faded fast as she rushed out of the room, but Jean stayed frozen, not even blinking. Bit by bit, his memories came back. Everything from this life, every moment, rushed in all at once

And it hit him. This time. Samira hadn’t just been hurt. She had changed. She didn’t love him anymore. He could feel it

The final piece fell into place. The day she handed him those papers. She had said they were divorce papers

He thought she was bluffing. Smiling like a fool, he signed them without a second thought. But now. now it made sense. She meant every damn word

He had lost her a long time ago and he hadn’t even realized it. Heart racing, Jean tore off the blanket, yanked the IV out of his arm and stumbled out of bed

t be how it ended, not again

He had to find her. This couldn’t be
