Chapter 10
The banquet was divided by rank: Reynard with the lords in the great hall, Lysette and I among the noblewomen in the inner court.
She spoke to me privately.
“Reynard has long admired you. His fortune was truly great to marry you.”
She then shifted the conversation to matters of offspring.
“Reynard is twenty–three now, but still without children. It makes me anxious.”
Her gaze lingered meaningfully on me.
I blushed deeply, lowering my head in embarrassment, and murmured,
“I have been taking care of my health.”
the Dowager Duchess then turned her attention to Lysette.
“Is this your daughter? She is so well–behaved, and looks so much like you.”
She beckoned Lysette over, speaking to her for a while. Lysette stood obediently by her side, occasionally serving her wine. the Dowager Duchess seemed quite pleased.
WAs the daughter of Duchess Elinor, she shall be granted the title of Viscountess.”
I took Lysette’s hand and happily knelt to express my gratitude.
After the banquet ended, Reynard waited for me outside.
The moonlight bathed him in its soft glow, serene and gentle.
”
I felt a surge of joy, but restrained myself due to the formality, walking briskly toward him.
“Lysette has been made a County Princess by the Dowager Duchess.”
He stepped forward to greet me, holding my hand in his, before lowering his gaze to look at Lysette.
“That is not enough. She should be made a Duchess. As for the lands I control, part of them will be hers too.”
I was taken aback and looked up at him.
He smiled.
He only smiled. “If my mother loves her, so do I.”

Following the feast, I prepared to return to Verdantia. The dowry I brought back was considerable, and I hired several ships to transport it.
These assets were to be left to Lysette in the future.
When Edric heard of Lysette’s elevation to County Princess, he flew into a rage at the household.
Cedric, who had no title to pass on, could only bow low before her now.
Naturally, this did not sit well with him.
Before I departed, he came to see me, and the guards, unaware of the events at Blackthorn Keep, allowed him entry.
Cedric, of course, was stopped at the gate.
This time, Edric quickly knelt. His eyes were red, and his voice choked with emotion.
“Mother, I was wrong.”
Mariette reminded him, You address Her Grace.”
I did not want to ask him where he had gone wrong. He was clever, and no doubt had prepared his excuses.
I spoke directly, “When I gave you the pendant, do you wish to use it now?
Edric froze, clearly unsure of how to respond.
What he sought–titles–I could not give him.

But I could lend him a hand.
With his ability and family background, he could easily become a county lord.
I was not in a rush and casually opened a book to read.
He lowered his head, pondering for a long while before softly replying,
“No, Your Grace.”
I nodded,
“Then you may leave.”
He hurriedly stood and performed his salute before quickly leaving, his expression marked by a mix of confusion and humiliation that was rare for someone of his age.
