Chapter 6
Seeing my pale face, Vince’s brows remained tightly knit. “I spoke harshly yesterday. Gwen is innocent–our quarrels shouldn’t involve her.”
His words caused a pang in my chest.
But instead of explaining, as I would have in the past, I simply smiled faintly.
“There won’t be a next time.”
Vince gently adjusted my blanket.
“I wasn’t able to accompany you to see the meteor last night. Once we’re married, I’ll take you back home. I remember you love the South. After we return, we can go there together.”
I froze, but then smiled softly. “No need.”
“You don’t have to make up for last night. It’s my choice to save Guinevere.”
Vince seemed taken aback. His eyes roiled with emotion.
“I’ve already arranged for a carriage to leave the city in five days. Once you’re better, we’ll depart.”
I stared at Vince without speaking.
He held the bowl, his hand trembling slightly.
His hand had once been severely injured, and the pain flared up every time it rained.
Even now, just holding a bowl of food seemed to cost him an immense amount of effort.
A wave of sorrow filled me. I asked softly, “Do you regret it? Saving me, even though it has hurt you so much?”
Vince’s expression remained calm.
“There’s nothing to regret. If it were anyone else, I would have done the same.”
A faint sadness clouded my eyes, and my voice grew weaker.
“Even climbing a frozen cliff for snowblooms when I had the fever?”
“Yes,”
There was nothing special about me after all.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I forced a smile.
”
“Vince, thank you for saving me, again and again. I grew up without parents, so I longed for a home. That’s why I forced you to marry me. I must have been unbearable, making you suffer so much, right?”
But starting today, it would be different.
He wouldn’t have to abandon the one he loved, forced to marry me.
We wouldn’t torture each other for ten years, and he wouldn’t die at thirty because of me.
This time, he would be fine.
I thought I saw Vince’s face shift in panic, as if he wanted to say something, but he was interrupted by a hurried maid.
“Lord, Lady Gwen is awake/She’s desperately looking for you and refuses to eat. Please go see her!”
A smile spread across Vince’s handsome face, and he glanced at me before standing to leave.
“I’ll be back soon.”
“Vince,” I called after him, smiling brightly. “I’m sorry, and… I wish you a long and happy life.”
Vince was taken aback, a sense of unease crossing his face. “Why are you saying such things? I’m just going to check on Gwen. I’ll be back quickly. Eat something, and I have something to tell you when I return.”
With that, the lett.
It wasn’t long before noon. I struggled to get out of bed.

The doctor arrived to check on me and prescribed some medicine.
I smiled gratefully. “I’ll take the medicine properly. Thank you, doctor. Please tell the lord that I’m heading to the South. Ask him to take care.”
By the time Vince returned, I was gone.
He asked the servants in a panic, “Where is Seraphina? She haven’t recovered. Where did she go?”
Before anyone could answer, a guard rushed in, his face pale.
“Lord, on the road out of the city, mountain bandits attacked. The villagers who were cut with swords are alive, but the lady who just had her heart blood taken… she lost too much blood. She’s dead.”
