Chapter 14%
Joshua attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills. He pulled out the IV from his hand and swallowed a large dose of medication, slipping into unconsciousness. It was Shawn who found him first and called for the doctors. After more than half an hour of emergency gastric lavage and resuscitation, Joshua was brought back to life.
Shawn and I stood by the window outside the hospital ward, looking at the skinny Joshua sleeping inside with no waves in our hearts.
“Why did you save him?” I asked.}
Shawn stood behind me, his voice devoid of emotion. “Because he doesn’t deserve to die. Death would be an escape. Only by staying alive can he suffer endless torment.”
He suddenly turned the question on me. “Sierra, what about you?“}
I was caught off guard for a moment. I tilted my head slightly and my gaze landed on the sharp lines of his jaw. “What do you mean? I’m not suicidal.“}
“Have you let go?” Shawn’s eyes locked onto mine as if he could see straight into my soul.
Had I let go? A small smile tugged at my lips, bright and carefree. “Yes, I have.“}
The moment Joshua held Zafrielle in his arms and told me he wanted a divorce, I had already decided to move on. A person who betrays genuine love deserves to swallow a thousand needles. Let’s call it karma since he had already been in a car accident. As for me, staying away from someone who hurt me isn’t suffering; it’s a blessing.
Joshua’s eyes suddenly flew open, catching me off guard. Our eyes met. For a split second, my mind went blank, but I quickly reacted. I pulled my hat down, put on my sunglasses and hurriedly walked out.
“Evelyn!” Joshua called my name from the hospital bed.
“Evelyn, is that you?” He stumbled as he got out of bed, clutching the wall for support as he tried to chase after me.
“Evelyn!” But when he burst through the door, only Shawn was there.
Shawn met his gaze calmly, his expression steady. “Mr. Sinclair, are you feeling better?“}
Joshua’s eyes flickered with suspicion and confusion as he stared at Shawn. After a moment, his pale face twitched. “Was it just you here? I saw Evelyn.“}
Shawn chuckled, his voice indifferent. “Then you must have been seeing things. Have you forgotten, Mr. Sinclair? My sister is dead, because of you.”
Joshua gritted his teeth, coughing hard. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on Shawn like he was trying to see something hidden in his face. Then, Joshua grabbed Shawn’s collar, “Then why did you save me? You should have let me die! I need to apologize to Evelyn!“}
Shawn’s lips curled up slightly, his gaze drifting into the distance. His voice was crisp and cold. “You have to stay alive, of course. Because even in death, Evelyn wouldn’t want to see you.“}
After hearing this, his pale lips were even more bloodless. He clutched his chest, his eyes even redder and then he turned and walked back to the room, completely broken.
