Chapter 17 Damon
Quinn wagged her finger, confident and mysterious.
“Relax. Even if he reads it, he won’t understand a word”
Then she took Sally’s hand, her expression serious.
“He’s going to the same place you are. You can keep an eye on him for me on the road.”

Sally’s mouth dropped open. That handsome Stanley guy was the same Dusty she used to chase around as a kid? And lately, she’d been totally crushing on him. He probably thought she was a complete joke.
She
e pouted, both embarrassed and hesitant, and looked at Quinn.
Quinn didn’t want to push her. She threw an arm around Sally’s shoulders and said lightly.
“If you really don’t want to, I’ll figure something else out. No pressure.”
“No. I want to go! The manager gave me this task personally. If I pull it off, I’ll finally be a full–time employee.”
Sally’s tone was firm and her eyes were determined. Stanley wasn’t some kind of monster. What was there to be afraid of?
Quinn finally felt a little more at ease. She had to get to the bottom of the truth and pull her grandfather out of that pit she needed was for him to hold on.
Three days later. Stanley stood at the edge of a village in casual clothes, backpack slung over one shoulder. He was tall, sharp- featured, and even in regular clothes, he stood out.
He looked around at the broken–down surroundings. This is where Quinn’s contact lives?
Ahead of him sat a crooked little house with no foundation, barely holding itself together. It looked like a strong breeze could knock it over.
In the y
yard were a few books and old undershirts hanging out to dry. Sunflower seed shells were scattered across the dirt.
Stanley looked down at the red envelope again, double–checked the address, then knocked on the half–open wooden door
The wood creaked under his knuckles.
He frowned and looked back at the letter in his hand.
Then he looked up and found himself staring into a pair of clear eyes.
The person at the door had long, messy hair and was wearing nothing but an old undershirt in the middle of winter. One of the hands on the doorframe was missing a finger.
Startled, Stanley instinctively jumped back a step.
“Who are you?” The voice was hoarse, the gaze cold and suspicious as it scanned him from head to toe.
Stanley exhaled, steadied himself, and held out the letter.
I’m here on behalf of Quinn. She asked me to deliver this.”
Damon took the envelope, tossed his shoulder–length hair back, and opened it. A few lines of code appeared inside.
Stanley leaned in curiously, didn’t understand a single thing, and quickly looked away.
