Quinn said, “Grandpa, I remember the fish and chips you made were the best. How about showing off your skills today?”
Norman laughed, his face full of wrinkles. “Alright, these two boys are in for a treat today.”
In the living room, Marcus took Norman’s place to play chess with Zayden.
Zayden wore a serious expression, while Marcus smiled with a suitable curve at the corner of his lips.
“Mr. Howard, your speed in collecting evidence is impressive,” Zayden said first, placing a piece.
Marcus followed suit, making his move without retreat or advance, his easy going way of playing matching his words. “It’s just luck. I’m not that capable. It was just a coincidence.”
Zayden placed another piece, changing the situation on the board.
“Forget everything else. I searched for three years and couldn’t find the video of Olive hitting someone. How did you collect it in one night?”
Marcus stared at the board, thinking. “The video? I pried it out of Zack. The Fairchild family wanted him to destroy it, but it’s not strange that he kept a copy for himself.”
His explanation was flawless, but the more Marcus seemed calm and unbothered, the more Zayden doubted him.
“If you can’t be honest, stay away from Quinn. She hates being lied to.”
“Oh? Speaking of lying, aren’t you talking about yourself?” Marcus mocked.
Zayden was taken aback.
Back when he told Jasper Hawkins that he considered Quinn his sister, he had lied to both of them and to himself. In the end, it had hurt Quinn badly.
Indeed, he had been wrong. Now, he would make up for it. He didn’t need an underhanded Marcus stirring things up.
Zayden’s gaze narrowed, and with a sharp thud, he placed another piece, coldly warning, “In any case, Quinn is not someone you can casually mess with. If you do, don’t blame me for being rude.”
Marcus didn’t back down, meeting his gaze with a bloodthirsty smile. “Then I’ll be looking forward to seeing just how rude you can be.”
The two were locked in a silent battle, subtly competing against each other.
“Time to clean up, dinner’s ready.”
Quinn’s clear voice rang out from a distance.
It interrupted their battle.

“I’ll go help Quinn. You clean up the mess!” Zayden stood up first and made his way to the table, taking the initiative.
Marcus, his expression cold, didn’t seem bothered.
He stayed behind to handle what seemed like an inevitable loss.
His eyes fixed on the game, every move was blocked by Zayden. It seemed no matter where he placed his pieces, the outcome would be a defeat.
Marcus had to admit, Zayden really had some skills.
A few seconds later, his long fingers lightly placed a piece, turning the losing game into a draw with a last- minute turn of events.
Marcus smiled smugly as he collected all the pieces.
At the dinner table, Norman seized the right moment and casually asked, “Marcus, what does your family do? You don’t seem like someone from an ordinary family.”
Marcus served Norman some food and responded politely, “Oh, just some small business overseas. It’s nothing worth mentioning.”
“Overseas? Your business must be doing well.”
“Don’t mention it. I’m not that capable. I’ll probably have to trouble you for more guidance in the future, Mr. Norman.”
Norman enjoyed the compliment, smiling with his eyes squinted, though the smile didn’t quite reach his
eyes.
A few days later, Norman mysteriously pulled Quinn aside.
“Quinn, I had my old friend look into Marcus these past few days. It’s true that Marcus’s family is middle- class, but I don’t think everything he said is the full truth.”
He thought for a moment. “You can tell right away he’s an impractical young man. Zayden, on the other hand, seems more reliable.”
Quinn felt embarrassed, setting down her work. She sighed helplessly. “Grandpa, didn’t you forget what I told you before?”
Norman, of course, remembered. Quinn just wanted to take good care of Norman for the rest of her life and live with him.
Even though he was still around to provide Quinn with a family, he wasn’t a timeless being. He couldn’t be by her side forever, and the events of the past few years had made him feel more uncertain.
“I’m getting old. I can’t be with you forever. I just want to see you have someone to rely on while I’m still
around.”
He was eager to find Quinn someone she could depend on.

Norman, pushed gently by Quinn, was eager to finish what he was saying, but Quinn didn’t give him any chance, so he had no choice but to obediently get in the car and head to the Grant residence.
