Chapter 24
Zachary’s breath was way for close, brushing against my cheek. I put some distance between us and said, “Tonight is no good. We have a company meeting”
“How about tomorrow?” he asked
I replied, “I doubt I’ll be free in the next few days. It’s a major airshow, Mr. Stone wouldn’t be here in person if it weren’t a big deal.”
He remarked, “You’re even more beautiful than you used to be.”
I grinned “Your wife is much prettier.”
Zachary chuckled awkwardly and pressed on. “She’s not as pretty as you. What time does your meeting end? If dinner doesn’t work, we could grab
nething late”
Suddenly, Luther called out, “Ms. Miller, ”
“Coming,” I quickly responded, took the suitcase from Zachary, and quickened my pace.
The airshow organizers provided two sedans in accordance with the head count.
The car door opened.
Adeline and I stood behind Luther. He got in and looked toward the person next to me. “I need to fill you in on a few things, Ms. Larkin.”
Catching onto the hint, I grabbed my luggage and walked to the other car, leaving with the technical team.
When we arrived at the hotel, Zachary took care of everything at the front desk. He smiled meaningfully when he passed me my room card. “This one’s yours, Sapphire.”
I grabbed the keycard and noticed that he was thinking about walking me to my room, so I said, “We’ve got our keycards, Mr. Bell. Thanks for all your help from the airport to the hotel. You probably have work to do, so don’t let us keep you.”
Before Zachary could say anything, Matthew stepped forward and gestured politely, “I’ll walk you out, Mr. Bell.”
Seeing this, Zachary awkwardly excused himself.
There were two elevators. Adeleine was glued to Luther’s side, so I sensibly went with the technical tearn.
Coincidentally, my room was on the same floor as Luther’s, and Adeline’s room was one floor down.
With Luther’s eyes on me, I unlocked the door to my room and opened it with him watching. When I was about to close it, he stuck his foot in and forced his way inside. After stepping inside, he hung the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door.
I could tell from his expression that he was here to confront me. I set my suitcase by the wall and turned around before he suddenly pulled me in.
He grumbled, “You and your old classinate are really hitting it off. If I hadn’t interrupted, you would have thrown yourself at him.”
I retorted, “Can you drop the snark? There’s nothing between us.”
Luther shoved ine onto the bed, pulled off his tie, and unbuttoned his shirt. With his arms on either side of my head, he asked, “How would I know? You two were so cozy right in front of me. Who knows what you’ve been planning in private? Is he showing up tonight?”
I met his gaze unyieldingly. “Come on, Luther. You know exactly what kind of shape I am in You were the one applying ointment to me last night. Did you forget already?”
He pulled up my shirt slightly and leaned down, kissing me on the lips. “Are you trying to turn me down?”
Luther came out of the shower and answered Adeline’s call. The room was so quiet, so I could more or less make out what was being said.
She was asking why he wasn’t in his room. Apparently, she had just gone to his room, but he wasn’t around.
He pulled me into his embrace. “I had to go out to take care of something.”
“When are you coming back?” Adeline asked.
He muzzled my hair with the tip of his nose and murmured, “Not sure yet.”
