Chapter 7°
Too bad for her–I could see her faking it. Girl’s lashes were shaking like mad.”
So yeah. I broke another stick on her too.”
Felt even better the second time.
Court day came. I sat in the plaintiff’s seat, head held high.M
On the defense? Just Vicky’s lawyer. Neither she nor Kurt could even get out of their hospital beds.
Their lawyer tried pulling out the contract with my signature.
But Helga just smiled and hit play on the surveillance footage.}
Crystal clear audio and video–me rejecting the contract, Vicky threatening me, and then her walking out with the damn thing anyway. Bet she never guessed I’d installed cameras in the apartment.
Then came the receipts. Literal ones. Screenshots of every cent Vicky “borrowed” from me over the years–transfers, credit swipes, you name it. Total? Almost half a million.
And I demanded every damn cent back.
With all the evidence, the court didn’t even hesitate.
Vicky was guilty of forging my signature and sparking cyber bullying.”
Final ruling? She had to compensate me 200,000 dollars for financial loss, plus repay the 400,000 she owed me.}
That was a big fat 600,000 dollars to be paid–within one month.
Ten days later, I got 570,000 in my account.
That’s when I learned the court notice had gone unsigned at her current address and was instead sent to her parents‘ place. No doubt her parents paid for it.
They live in the countryside and have survived on farming their whole lives. They probably sold their house and land to scrape it together. I couldn’t feel sorry for them, though.
At least, Vicky still had her mom and dad to clean up her mess.
Me? I had no one.
My parents died young. My aunt and uncle raised me until I was 18, and after that, I was on my own. Worked part–time through college just to survive.
I don’t even blame my relatives. My parents didn’t leave anything behind.
That’s why I was always so guarded.}
So when Vicky acted like a friend, I gave her everything.}
But she was nothing but a snake. A venomous, calculating snake!}}
A month later, a middle–aged couple knocked on my door.”
The moment I opened it, they dropped to their knees.”
“Miss Brockenbrough, please, have mercy on us–we really don’t have any money left…”
They kept begging, banging their heads on the floor.}
I snapped out of it just in time to help them up. “I’m sorry, you are…?”
“We’re… Vicky’s parents,” her mom said, her voice cracking. “Our daughter… She owes you a lot. We will definitely pay you back, but please just give us a little more time…”
The woman’s expression was miserable, her eyes full of pleading.
Just hearing Vicky’s name made me frown instinctively. “This isn’t up to me. The court decided this.“}
“Miss Brockenbrough, please–we will pay it back. But right now we really can’t pull together the money…”
“Could you please have mercy and tell Blount & Bluebell Press not to sue our Vicky? She can’t… My baby can’t go to jail!”
That’s when I found out the rest of the story.!!
Because of her, Blount & Bluebell Press had to pay a massive breach–of–contract fine after losing a lawsuit with Atlas Publishing.
They fired her, and then they sued her to pay the damages.
But where would Vicky get that much money? She lived paycheck to paycheck, maxed out five credit cards just last month, and even hadn’t paid those off%
So again, the court notice was sent to her parents‘ place. And when her mom saw all those zeros in the penalty?% Poor woman fainted on the spot.
