Chapter 4
Just when I was about to leave for good with my daughter…]
The next morning, the whole damn family showed up at my door.[]
They circled around me, and Thad–my husband–threw divorce papers in my face.]]
I blinked, stunned for a second at the clean–slate divorce agreement.]
Then I let out a cold, bitter laugh.[]
Thad noticed the look in my eyes and said with that icy tone of his.[]
“Sign it.”
“Then take your little cancer kid and get the hell out.“[]
Imogene sneered.]]
“You brought that little brat into our house–what if her kidney cancer infects my grandson?“]
“Exactly.”
“That curse of a child is nothing but bad luck.“]
“Without you, our family would be thriving!“]
“Kidney cancer is cancer.“]
“There’s no cure!”
“And you expect my son to be a donor?“]
“You must want us wiped off the face of the earth!“]
I listened to their vile words and couldn’t believe it.[]
I remembered how, in my past life, when their precious grandson got sick-]
They sold everything, scraped every last cent together.
Even took out high–interest loans, sold blood, begged anyone just to afford treatment.]
But now that it’s my daughter, their granddaughter, all they care about is cutting ties-[]
Afraid we’ll drag their perfect little world down with us.]
Same blood, same family. But because she’s a girl, suddenly we’re disposable.
My little girl didn’t understand why her grandparents hated her.
She clung to me, tears streaming down her cheeks, and asked,[]
“Mommy, did Sera do something bad?”
“Why do Grandma and Grandpa yell at me?“[]
“Is it ‘cause I asked for meat?“]
“Did that make them mad?“]
“Sera won’t eat meat anymore.”
“I don’t want them to be mad at me.“]
I looked at her and felt like my heart was breaking all over again.
I raised my head and looked at them, my gaze ice cold.]
“You’re really not going to help her?”
“She’s your daughter. Your granddaughter.“]
Imogene scoffed.]

Chapter 4
“The Miller family doesn’t need some barren little mutt screwing up our legacy.“]
“You’re her mother–if you care so much, figure if out yourself.“[]
“Leave us out of it.“[]
Their words, their cruelty–it finally broke something in me, 0
I didn’t beg. []
I didn’t plead.]
I signed the papers, packed our things, and walked away with my daughter.)
As we left, Imogene and Barnabas actually looked relieved. []
Thad smiled.]
“Finally got rid of those two leechest“]
We hadn’t even made it far when my phone buzzed.
It was a Facebook post from Imogene.[]
“Thaddeus Miller and Elspeth Carter are officially divorced.“]
“She is no longer a part of our family.”
“Sera is no longer our granddaughter.“[]
Her leukemia has nothing to do with us.”
“Please don’t involve us in her mess.“[]
Right after that, Thad sent me a text.]
“If you give up Sera and apologize. I’ll give you another chance to be part of the Miller family.“]
I scoffed and blocked that piece of trash on the spot.
Let them talk big now. []
It won’t be long before they’re begging me instead.
When I got back to my parents‘ house with Sera, they immediately pulled me aside.[]
They’d seen the posts. They knew.
My mom was holding Sera, sobbing uncontrollably.]
“My sweet Sera…. how could life be so cruel to you?“]
Dad’s face was drawn and tired, but he grabbed my hand tight.[]
“We may not have much, but we’re not letting Sera go without a fight.“]
He handed me a few bank cards,[]
There’s fifty grand in here.“]
“Me and your mom will pull together another twenty.“[]
“Those trees you planted when you were a kid?“]
“They’ve matured now.”
“Ive got someone lined up to buy them–we’ll get maybe another fifteen grand.“}
“And if that’s not enough, we’ll borrow.“[]
“We’ll take out a loan. Whatever it takes.“[]
“We’re not letting Sera go.”

Chapter 4
Their words were like a warm blanket over my soul.
In my last life, after Sera died, it was my parents who held me up.[]
They never stopped fighting for her, never let me drown in my grief.[]
They wore themselves thin trying to help, and in the end, they died from exhaustion and heartbreak.]
That loss will always haunt me.[]
Looking at them now, tears in their eyes, I couldn’t lie anymore.[]
“Mom. Dad. It’s not Sera who has kidney cancer.“[]
“The one who’s sick… is their grandson. Jethro.“]]
I showed them the hospital reports.
When they saw the name, they froze–then cried tears of relief.]
“I knew it,” my mom said, hugging Sera tight. []
“I knew our Sera would be okay.“[]
“She’s too sweet not to be okay.“]
“Their grandson’s the one with cancer?‘
“Good! Let them suffer for once. Let their line die with him!”
