Chapter 6
Once I got home, I cut off all contact with my ex–husband’s family.]
Blocked every single one of them.[]
Since I walked away from the divorce with nothing, there was no property to fight over.[]
Which meant I never had to see those miserable faces again.[]
By my estimate, their precious grandson was about to hit the tipping point with his illness.]]
Cancer treatment costs a fortune as it is.
Not to mention, they’ve always spoiled that kid rotten.]
And Cletus’s wife?
Selfish as hell, always blowing through cash like it grows on trees.
They barely scraped together enough for the hospital bills.]
At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before they lose everything.]]
They already threw my daughter under the bus–but would they really do the same to their precious grandson?
Not that I care anymore.[]
After everything, I’ve learned to treasure this second chance life gave me.]]
Sera, too–she started off heartbroken, but slowly began to smile again.
Still, I never let my guard down.[]
I’ve seen the true face of my ex’s family, and I’d be a fool to forget.]
And just like i feared, it didn’t take long for them to show up at my door.
Barnabas and Imogene were banging like maniacs, screaming before I even opened the door.
“Elspeth Carter, you heartless witch!“]
“Get your ass out here!“]
“You knew damn well my grandson had kidney cancer–he’s in the hospital right now, and you’re gonna take responsibility!“]]
“Open the damn door!“]]
“Don’t you hide in there, I know you’re home!“]]
I looked at my parents.
They were furious, eyes locked on me, worried.[]
“I knew that family was bad news,” my dad muttered. []
“But this? This is insane.”
The pounding got louder and more aggressive.]
Barnabas was going off the rails, with Cletus adding fuel to the fire.]
Soon, the noise drew in curious neighbors.
And that’s when Imogene started turning on the theatrics.
“Folks, y’all gotta hear this!”
This girl here–she used to be my daughter–in–law.“]
“She’s the reason my grandson got sick
“She lied and said her own daughter had cancer, tricked us into giving her all our savings!“]
“Because of her, we missed the best treatment window.”

Chapter 6
“Then she dumped my son like trash!“]
“My poor grandson is dying, and this cold–blooded woman won’t lift a finger to help!”
She really laid it on thick, all crocodile tears and sob stories.[]
And sadly, most people bought it.[]
They started shouting, turning on me like a mob.
“How could the Carter girl do something so heartless?”
“Seriously, who lies about cancer?“]
“She scammed them while their grandson was dying?“]
“That’s straight–up evil!“]
Everyone was talking over each other, throwing blame without knowing a damn thing.
I sat there expressionless, casually snacking on sunflower seeds.]
But my parents were livid.]
“That’s it, I’m going out there to set things straight!” my mom snapped.
I stopped them.]
No point in arguing with people who just want drama.]
They didn’t care about the truth–they wanted a show.
I grabbed my phone and called the cops.
They showed up fast.]
But when the cops arrived, Barnabas and Imogene didn’t even flinch.]
They started yelling louder, dragging the cops into their mess.
“You gotta arrest this whole family!” Imogene shrieked. []
“Force ‘em into surgery!“]]
“My grandson needs a kidney!“[]
I couldn’t help but laugh.[]
it’s true what they say–some people are so shameless, nothing fazes them.
I opened the door and calmly explained everything-[]
From the beginning to the chaos at my front step.]
Some of the neighbors began to look unsure.[]
Barnabas and Cletus just doubled down, still screaming insults.
Luckily, the cops had common sense.
They listened to both sides and figured out pretty quickly who was lying.[]
Imogene kept running her mouth, but the cops just looked at me with this tired, almost sympathetic expression.[]
“Well, ma’am,” one of them said, “we’re gonna need everyone to come in for statements.“[]
I didn’t mind–Sera’s healthy and has no kidney problems.[]
But their golden boy?
Still stuck in a hospital bed.
Realizing their tantrum wasn’t getting them anywhere, Barnabas and Cletus gave me the death stare.]
Then stormed off, grumbling some lame excuse as they left.
